ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters responded Friday afternoon to a residential structure fire on the 1200 block of Silvestre Road in Hope Ranch and quickly knocked down the flames in about 15 minutes while checking to ensure no one was inside—reports of a dog and a cat being injured remain unconfirmed. Noozhawk
- ➤ Joseph Isaac Medina, owner of the popular Birria Boyz food truck, died in a traffic collision on July 1 near Lompoc when his 2018 Chevrolet left the road and overturned into a dry concrete irrigation canal + CHP investigators are working to determine the cause. Edhat
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ As of noon on July 4, the Madre Fire near Cuyama covered 70,801 acres with 10% containment and threatened 50 structures although no injuries were reported. Firefighters battled the fast-moving brush fire amid high winds and hot, dry weather while Highway 166 stayed closed and access to Carrizo Plain National Monument was restricted. Edhat
- ➤ U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced at a Western Governors' Association meeting that the agency will eliminate the Roadless Rule—putting over 600,000 acres of Los Padres National Forest at risk near Santa Barbara. Environmental groups have urged Congress to support the Roadless Area Conservation Act to permanently protect these lands from new roadbuilding and logging. Edhat
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Santa Barbara County Association of Governments approved $4.3 million in Measure A funds to build bike paths, sidewalks, and safe routes to school in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta and Isla Vista. The projects will be built over the next few years after 17 proposals for nearly $8.8 million were reviewed, showing high community need for safer routes. Noozhawk
- ➤ California is set to pay incarcerated firefighters the federal minimum wage during active fires after they helped battle wildfires in Los Angeles in January. The wage increase—funded by $10 million in the state budget—will take effect on January 1 if the Legislature passes the bill. Santa Barbara Independent
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Officials from the Santa Barbara Health Department and Cottage Health released a Community Health Improvement Plan that sets a three-year roadmap through 2027 to improve access to care, behavioral health, and maternal health.
