  • Santa Barbara’s Chase Palm Park will host the annual Dolphin Derby Festival on Sunday, July 13 from noon to 5 p.m. This free event invites residents to adopt toy dolphins for $10 each for a chance to win cash prizes up to $2,500 — and will feature food vendors, a beer and wine garden for adults, and a Yappy Hour for dogs.  Noozhawk

  • Justin Mateen (Tinder co-founder) and his brother Tyler have bought Santa Barbara’s historic El Encanto Resort for $82.2 million from Belmond and will invest $40 million in a three-year renovation (the boutique property will remain open during work).  Santa Barbara Independent

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 6–7, ICE agents in Santa Barbara and Carpinteria arrested several people while refusing to show identification — bystanders recorded the interactions, and the arrests were part of a broader federal immigration enforcement effort that may continue through July 16.  Edhat

  • Siam Street Food opened at 425 State Street in downtown Santa Barbara—the former location of Zen Yai Thai Cuisine—and now offers authentic Thai dishes such as pad Thai, som tam, and mango sticky rice at accessible prices. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Westmont has introduced a herd of sheep to graze on non-native vegetation near Voskuyl Library and along Westmont Creek to reduce wildfire fuel for about three weeks. Coordinated by Montecito Fire, the flock from Cuyama Lamb will target tobacco, tumbleweeds, castor bean and eucalyptus regrowth — a move aimed at lowering fire risk in the area.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Southern California Edison has warned 3,921 customers in parts of Santa Barbara County that power may be shut off today as early as 3:00 p.m.—the outage may extend through the weekend due to dangerous wildfire conditions and high temperatures.  Edhat
  • Starting Saturday night, southbound traffic on Highway 101 between Olive Mill Road and Posilipo Lane will divert to new median lanes—these lanes are separated by safety barriers as part of the highway widening project. The change also brings temporary closures of off-ramps at both Olive Mill Road and San Ysidro Road, with the southbound on-ramp at Olive Mill Road closing for about nine months and the San Ysidro Road off-ramp for three months.  Edhat
  • Santa Barbara Housing Authority received $5.8M from California’s Homekey+ program to buy the Quality Inn at 3055 De la Vina Street and will turn it into 32 supportive housing units for extremely low-income individuals. The project will add onsite case management and health-care navigation+and accept Section 8 tenants paying no more than 30 percent of their income, with work set to finish in 2026.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Cottage Health opened Cottage Surgical Clinics on July 7 at 2320 Bath Street, Suite 101 in Santa Barbara—this specialty clinic offers expert general, colorectal, and bariatric surgical care using minimally invasive techniques. Board-certified surgeons including Dr. Farida Bounoua, Dr. David Thoman, and Dr. Lexine Yurcho led the team and the clinic is now accepting new patients.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Today, Dr. Hilary Quinn and her team at Wilder Animal Hospital offer full pet care in Santa Barbara, providing wellness exams, urgent treatment, surgery, and acupuncture for dogs, cats, and small pets.
