CRIME NEWS

  • Federal agents raided a Carpinteria cannabis farm on Thursday near Glass House Farms as a large protest gathered along Casitas Pass Road and Foothill Road—officers detained 10 workers and used smoke bombs to disperse an estimated crowd of 100 to 200—and Carpinteria Councilwoman Mónica J.   • Three self-identified First Amendment auditors filmed and harassed patients, visitors, and staff outside Cottage Hospital on Nogales Avenue on July 9, sparking concern among local residents.  Edhat
  • On Thursday, a juvenile held at Santa Maria Juvenile Hall was booked for the July 4 murder of 25-year-old Brandon Cabrera — detectives identified him during their investigation.  KEYT
  • Santa Barbara police began fining e-bike riders after the warning period ended under Municipal Code 10.52 — officers impounded a Surron e-bike near Dolphin Fountain and issued fines from $100 to $500.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from UCSB and SDSU developed a new nonlinear model that uses NASA’s SMAP data (which tracks soil moisture) to study how plants handle water stress. The study found that plants act either as water spenders or water savers (a discovery that may guide better water management) and will help update climate forecasts.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • UCSB Women's Volleyball team revealed its 2025 schedule on July 10 and will start the season on August 29 with two games at San Jose State. Head Coach Matt Jones, in his third season, said the team will face tough teams including some with NCAA wins—season tickets go on sale starting July 14—and will play key games through November.  Noozhawk
