BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tetiana, a Ukrainian immigrant who fled the war in 2022, started Ukrainian Flavors and now delivers traditional meals like varenyky, beef-stuffed cabbage rolls, borscht and crepes from a Camarillo production kitchen to local stores and families in Santa Barbara and nearby communities. She plans to grow the business by expanding partnerships with local grocers and exploring new opportunities in San Luis Obispo—helping customers reconnect with their heritage through every dish.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Barbara high school students were invited to join the Arts Fund's Teen Arts Mentorship Program to work with mentor Irene Ramirez in a collaboration with Pianos on State this September. The students will help design a piano that will be on view in October—applications for these free programs closed on July 10th.  Edhat
  • Residents will attend the DIGS celebration on Thursday, July 31 at the Santa Barbara Zoo to kick off Old Spanish Days and support the fundraiser—general admission is $160 until July 30 while day-of tickets are $185—for an event featuring live music, dancing, signature bites, margaritas, and exclusive after-hours zoo access for ages 21+.  Noozhawk
  • In 1925, an earthquake in Santa Barbara destroyed Mesa Lighthouse—one of the oldest Pacific Coast landmarks—as keeper Mrs. H.A. Weeks and her children narrowly escaped when the tower crashed through their building.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Westmont campus has welcomed a herd of sheep to eat non-native plants in the barranca west of Voskuyl Library to lower wildfire risk. The sheep, confined by a portable electric fence and managed by Montecito Fire, will graze for about three weeks—helping to restore oak woodland and protect local areas.  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The multi-million dollar project to add new on and offramps and reconfigure Cabrillo Boulevard is nearing its final phase after the Santa Barbara Architectural Board of Review approved landscaping changes. Crews will begin the next construction round next spring to enhance traffic flow and pedestrian safety using state and local funds—adding new trees and bridges along the way.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara Mayor Randy Rowse said the federal immigration raids were unwarranted and destructive after agents clashed with protesters on Casitas Pass Road—he stressed that local police only enforce the law and do not support ICE actions.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff announced that 18 California airports were awarded a total of $81.3 million from the FAA under the Airport Improvement Program — the funding will improve runways, taxiways, and noise mitigation measures at sites including Santa Barbara Municipal Airport, which will conduct a pavement study and develop a new management plan. The grants will help upgrade aviation infrastructure and enhance travel safety across the state.  Edhat

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cottage Health’s Nurse Residency Program at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital and Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital earned national accreditation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s PTAP. The eight-month program combines classroom education and clinical preceptorship—helping new nurses build skills—so they are better prepared for acute care.  Edhat
