COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Speckles is a five-month-old tortoiseshell domestic shorthair at the Santa Maria Campus who weighs 4.48 pounds and is waiting for a new caring home; she will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped at adoption + adoption centers are open daily from 12-4:30 p.m. except Wednesdays.  Edhat
  • On July 12, hundreds marched in Carpinteria to protest ICE raids on local marijuana farms—raids that followed a Thursday sweep at Glass House Farms in Carpinteria and Camarillo. Organizers said the protest brought together families and activists who demanded changes in immigration enforcement to better protect community members.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • This fall, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art will host two major exhibits featuring Impressionist art and 19th-century French art. Tickets for both exhibits will be on sale Saturday, Aug. 30—showing works by artists like Monet, van Gogh, and Matisse.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists at UCSB discovered that rivers form extra channels when bank erosion happens faster than sediment builds up—this discovery may lower costs for river repair projects—and they studied 84 rivers using 36 years of satellite images to better understand flood risks.  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A county Grand Jury report found that female inmates in Santa Barbara jails have fewer work and educational opportunities than male inmates due to low participation. The Sheriff’s Office will respond in 60 days — by adjusting work crew requirements and lowering class minimums — to address these disparities.  Noozhawk

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Soaring Association is celebrating 50 years of free flight at Elings Park training hill on Saturday, Aug. 2, with a family-friendly event from noon to 6 p.m. that will feature live flight demonstrations, historical exhibits, and $25 tandem discovery flights (certified instructors available).  Noozhawk

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, local tennis pro Kayla Day lost the USTA SoCal Series final in San Diego with scores of 6-4 and 6-3 to Stanford-bound Tianmei Wang. Day won four matches to reach the final as part of her comeback following December's ankle surgery.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB righthander Tyler Bremner was picked No. 2 overall by the Los Angeles Angels in the MLB Draft on Sunday, making him the highest drafted Gaucho in program history. He posted strong numbers in his sophomore and junior seasons and is expected to help improve Anaheim’s pitching rotation.  Noozhawk
  • On Saturday, the Santa Barbara Foresters beat the MLB Academy Barons 3 to 0 at Eddie Mathews Field during Hugs for Cubs Day with starter AJ Krodel striking out 10 batters in six innings while relief pitchers JD Goodcase and Easton Tumis kept the Barons scoreless — the team, now 20-8 in the CCL South, ended their weekend with a Sunday contest against the San Diego Bombers at 2 p.m.  Noozhawk
