COMMUNITY NEWS

  • La Casa de la Raza reopened Thursday after being red-tagged in May for safety violations and is now serving the Hispanic community at 601 E. Montecito Street (parts of the building remain under repair). Community volunteers fixed wiring and fire hazards so inspectors could remove the tag, and the space will soon host meetings and support immigrants amid ICE raids.  Edhat
  • Santa Barbara County Animal Services teams up with PetSmart Charities to host Adventure Awaits, a pet adoption event celebrating National Adoption Week at PetSmart, 7090 Hollister Ave., Goleta from 11 a.m.—3 p.m. Friday. The outdoor event will waive adoption fees—offering families a chance to meet adoptable pets.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara is adding citywide Fiesta decorations ahead of Old Spanish Days with banners and festive flags on homes and businesses. Local stores sell decorative items—officials say the displays are expected to boost the local economy.  KEYT
  • Santa Barbara Public Library announced its SB Reads 2025 title is the first graphic novel selection, The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen, and will host themed events from late October to late November—offering free print copies in English and Spanish at all branches—while readers can check out the print or e-book edition to join the discussion.  Noozhawk

  • Local and state officials announced the final $134 million award to finish the Santa Barbara U.S. 101 Multimodal Corridor with new carpool lanes, road safety upgrades, and walking and biking paths from Olive Mill Road and Hermosillo Road to Sycamore Creek—work that is set to finish by 2028.  Edhat
  • Santa Barbara County Probation Department is celebrating Pretrial, Probation and Parole Supervision Week from July 20 to 26 to thank probation officers who work to keep our community safe — by giving clear supervision and linking people to needed services. The week shows how staff help people follow court rules and get help with treatment, housing, and jobs — a mix that helps cut repeat crimes.  Noozhawk
  • The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is experiencing a countywide phone outage that is affecting 911 service, so residents should use Text to 911 or call (805)8965181 or (805)4515639 for emergency help while Santa Barbara Police increase patrols.  KSBY
  • California Attorney General Rob Bonta and 20 states have filed a lawsuit to block a federal policy announced July 10 that now bars undocumented immigrants from Head Start— a program that offers free preschool, meals, and basic health services to about 600 local families.
