COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Noozhawk is offering one young rider the chance to join the mutton bustin’ competition at the inaugural Santa Barbara Rodeo Days at Earl Warren Showgrounds. Parents can enter their child by 5 p.m. July 29 and the name will be announced that evening while the winning ride will take place on Aug. 3 at 1 p.m.—eligible kids must be 5 to 7 years old and weigh no more than 60 pounds.  Noozhawk
  • Local nonprofit C.A.R.E.4Paws is raising funds to open a private pet refuge this fall—designed to help families in crises like domestic violence and deportation keep their pets safe. The planned facility will include 10 dog kennels, a 40,000-square-foot exercise yard, and separate rooms for cats—offering free, confidential care with veterinary services, grooming, and dog training.  Edhat

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday evening, Santa Maria Police arrested two juveniles after witnesses reported one handling a handgun; officers located them near Pine Street and Cook Street (around 7:20 p.m.) where one was found with a firearm and the other with loaded magazines, leading to their booking into Juvenile Hall.  KSBY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Goleta photographer Frank DiMarco is set to join fellow Santa Barbara Visual Artists for an exhibit at The Voice Gallery (on Gallery Row at La Cumbre Plaza) in August. The show will run from Aug. 2 through Aug. 30 with a first Thursday artists reception (5 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 7).  Noozhawk
  • Daniel Hill came to Santa Barbara as a sailor and built his future by opening the first American trading post, building adobe homes, and securing lands that grew our town. He later named his land grant La Goleta Rancho—an act that gave our community the name Goleta and marks a key part of our local heritage.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gateway Educational Services will host the 3rd Annual Black Youth Leadership Summit at Santa Barbara City College’s West Campus on Aug. 16 — the free event gathers Black youth, parents, and educators from grades 5 through 12 for leadership workshops, cultural arts, and community dialogue. Around 150 participants are expected and bus transportation is provided from mid- and North County.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • River She-Oak is an evergreen tree with soft, long, segmented stems that look like pine needles—though it is a flowering plant from Australia and New Guinea. It grows well in our warm climate and is planted in parks, along streets, and in large gardens to add beauty and shade.  Edhat

  • The Good Lion is a craft cocktail bar under the historic Granada Theater on State Street that makes drinks with local, organic ingredients—its cocktails help local farms. The bar, certified as a Green Business—welcomes community members for a relaxed night out.  Edhat
