  • On July 31, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 19 Starlink satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base and the booster later landed on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship—residents in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties may have heard sonic booms depending on weather.  Edhat

CRIME NEWS

  • On Aug. 1 around 12:23 a.m., a stabbing on State Street left three people hospitalized, with one victim later dying and one person arrested—police closed the 500 block for investigation.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fiesta 2025 will honor four local figures as Fritz Olenberger leads the parade as El Presidente and rides in a carriage with his family—he also made the poster and the pin from his own photos. Teen Natalia Treviño will dance as the Spirit of Fiesta, 10-year-old Victoria Plascencia will perform her mission dance and sell her homemade slimes, and Julie Romero Hathaway has been named Saint Barbara to carry on her family tradition.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • On Friday, August 1, thousands gathered on Cabrillo Boulevard to watch the Fiesta Historical Parade as riders on hundreds of horses and musical groups entertained the crowd while local officials including Mayor Randy Rowse made appearances — the event featured cascarones and festive dancing.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • At the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Sunken Garden on Thursday evening, hundreds attended Las Noches de Ronda— a free celebration of flamenco dance and music where 16-year-old Natalia Treviño opened the show with her solo of Alegrias. The festival also featured over 200 volunteer performers and a debut by Contreras Flamenco Arts led by Jesalyn Contreras McCollum, and it continues nightly at 8 p.m. through Fiesta week.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara’s Allie Jones won a bronze medal in the heptathlon at the Toyota USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore on Friday. She scored 6,164 points and qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September — her strong finishes in the 200 meters and 800 helped her earn the spot.  Noozhawk
