COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members are invited to join the 10th Annual Lemon Run by the Goleta Education Foundation on Sunday, Sept. 21 at Lake Los Carneros with a 10K race starting at 8 a.m. and 5K and 1K fun runs following later. Proceeds will support elementary education in the Goleta Union School District & promote local sponsorship and youth scholarship opportunities.  Noozhawk
  • Police and community groups in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Lompoc, and Carpinteria are hosting National Night Out on Tuesday to offer free public safety events with family activities and emergency vehicle displays. Santa Barbara’s event at Spencer Adams Parking Lot runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. (similar gatherings in the other cities will feature games, food, and safety demonstrations) to help residents connect with first responders.  Noozhawk

CRIME NEWS

  • Officers from the Santa Maria Police Department Gang Suppression Team stopped a 24-year-old man driving while using his cell phone and without a valid license near BenWiley and El Camino, where they found an open container of alcohol, suspected narcotics (6.25 grams), an unserialized 9-millimeter handgun, and over $900 in cash, leading to the arrest of him and his 21-year-old passenger around 6:15 p.m. on Saturday night.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Rodeo Days opened at Earl Warren Showgrounds with events like mutton busting, steer wrestling, and bull riding that thrilled both local and national riders. The rodeo is part of Fiesta week and will continue on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a carnival, local food vendors, and live music.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UCSB will host free workshops for Santa Barbara high school students interested in applying to any UC campus. The sessions — held on August 12 or 13 and September 24 or 25 — will explain each part of the shared UC application process and students may attend alone — or with a family member — to get the help they need.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A black bear was seen near a Carpinteria residential area on July 31 at around 10:00 a.m. near Rancho Granada Mobile Home Park, prompting officials to warn residents to secure trash and pet food+ keep pets indoors. Earlier on July 17, bear droppings were found near Cameo Street and Casitas Pass Road, leading officials to urge extra caution in those neighborhoods.  Edhat
  • On Sunday, August 3rd, the Gifford Fire grew to nearly 40,000 acres with about 5% containment, injuring three people and prompting additional evacuations along Highway 166 in Santa Barbara County. Firefighters from several agencies are battling the flames in steep terrain and residents in the evacuation zones are urged to leave now—local officials stress following road closures and air quality alerts until conditions improve.  Edhat
