CRIME NEWS

  • In Santa Barbara County Superior Court on Monday, accomplice Ricardo Tomas Jauregui-Moreno testified that he left the scene after hearing gunshots during a gang-related shooting at Stearns Wharf in December 2022 – he admitted involvement in the fatal shooting of Robert Dion Gutierrez during the trial of 25-year-old Jiram Tenorio Ramon – and closing statements are set for today.  Noozhawk
  • The Santa Barbara County District Attorney charged Sergio Rivas—30—and Juan Fernando Rios—28—with murder after a fight on the 500 block of State Street led to the stabbing death of Anthony Michael Bisquera Hartley last week, injuring two others while a third suspect faces attempted murder charges.  Noozhawk
  • Jiram Tenorio Ramón is on trial for the December 2022 shooting of bystander Robert Gutierrez during a gang dispute at Stearns Wharf, and his lawyer argued that his client acted in self-defense while questioning the precision of expert Daniel O’Kelly’s tool mark analysis+ the jury will begin deliberating today.  KEYT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Gifford Fire grew to over 82,000 acres overnight and led firefighters to reinforce containment lines near Highway 166—forcing the road to close and threatening 872 structures. More than 1,900 personnel and heavy equipment are battling the blaze, and officials plan to establish an extra base camp in Santa Margarita today to speed up their response.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County today rolled out a new emergency mapping software called Genasys Protect during the Gifford Fire that lets residents see evacuation orders, road closures and shelters. Emergency responders use the tool to view at-risk structures and population zones, and officials said a Spanish translation will soon be added—helping non-English speakers stay informed.  Noozhawk

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara gave a $25,000 grant to UCSB’s Research Mentorship Program so high school students can work with cancer researchers this summer—helping students join the program regardless of cost since 2013.  Noozhawk
  • After joining Sutter Health nearly two years ago, Sansum Clinic has hired 50 new clinicians and cut primary care wait times to about two weeks - improvements that also include expanded urgent care hours and the launch of robotic surgery at Foothill Surgery Center to enhance local care.  Noozhawk
