COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 32nd annual Goleta Lemon Festival on September 27 and 28 at Girsh Park to celebrate Goleta's citrus history. The festival honors local roots from Sherman Patterson Stow’s first commercial lemon orchard and will feature more than 80 booths with lemon-themed food and crafts, live music, and family activities — drawing over 40,000 visitors — as part of this long-standing tradition.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara Humane will offer free dog vaccinations, flea control, and microchips at Day in the Park on Saturday, Aug. 17 at Waller Park in Santa Maria. The mobile clinic serves dogs on a first-come, first-served basis and no appointment is needed—vaccines include rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella.  Noozhawk

CRIME NEWS

  • Closing arguments wrapped Wednesday in the trial of Jiram Tenorio Ramon, accused of fatally shooting bystander Robert Gutierrez on Stearns Wharf in December 2022—now the Santa Barbara jury deliberates with a verdict expected as early as Monday.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • David Genovese, a 36-year-old Santa Barbara man, pleaded guilty to five counts of animal cruelty and admitted using a deadly weapon, receiving a six-year, eight-month prison sentence after sheriff’s deputies found a cat with a paracord around its neck in his vehicle + investigations later linked him to more cases of abused cats.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church will host a Greek Festival at Chase Palm Park on August 15 and 16—this event will feature Greek food and drinks, live music, dance shows, and a raffle prize to raise funds for the church. The festival runs from noon to 8 p.m. on both days and admission is $5 at the door.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Fred Armisen will perform his show Comedy for Musicians but Everyone is Welcome at Lobero Theatre at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17+ tickets are available online or at the box office with prices that vary by seating type+ the event promises fans a lively mix of his Broadway, television and film work.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials said the Gifford Fire burned 96,106 acres and was 15% contained by Thursday—new evacuation orders were issued for San Luis Obispo County and Highway 166 remains closed between Highway 101 in Santa Maria and Perkins Road in New Cuyama.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Santa Barbara said Casa de la Raza finished the first phase of safety fixes at 601 E. Montecito Street after a July 17 inspection removed red tags from most areas—though the Family Service Center and kitchen still remain under limits. Casa de la Raza, which reopened on July 22 as a safe space for the Hispanic community, plans to convert a catering truck into a mobile food pantry to help those who are afraid to leave home.  Edhat

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Daniel Crossman and Dr. Casey Whipple joined Cottage Primary Care—Goleta on August 5, and they will provide care for adults and patients of all ages using their many years of experience. The new appointments come as the clinic continues to offer full-time care during regular weekday hours.  Santa Barbara Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • On July 27, the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club held Ladies Hat Day where guests wore creative hats and cheered as Mokarow Farms won the Silver Cup match over Klentner Ranch after six chukkers—participants also competed for prizes in the hat contest. The club will host more summer events including the Pacific Coast Open and Friday Happy Hour matches as part of its High Goal season through October 12.  Santa Barbara Independent
