ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued for Huasna Valley and the Lopez Lake area due to the Gifford Fire, which has burned nearly 100,000 acres and threatened over 1,500 structures while officials closed key roads and canceled campground reservations. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County officials ordered all visitors to evacuate Lopez Lake as the Gifford Fire threatened the area — canceling all campground reservations from Aug. 7 to Aug. 21 and issuing full refunds. Public access remains closed until further notice.  KSBY
  • The Falcon 9 rocket will launch today from Vandenberg Space Force Base (between 7:05 and 11:05 p.m.) after the base adjusted its liftoff window to address neighbor complaints. The booster will deliver 24 Starlink satellites into orbit and return to land on a droneship in the Pacific Ocean.  Noozhawk
  • Highway 166 has been closed for a week since the Gifford Fire started and will remain closed for several more days as Caltrans repairs fire-damaged guardrails—officials noted that some residents and workers are permitted through strict checkpoints despite an ongoing evacuation order.  Noozhawk

HEALTH NEWS

  • Direct Relief is giving free N95 masks at several sites in Santa Barbara County to help residents breathe easier during the Gifford Fire, which started on August1 in northern Santa Barbara and is 15% contained. The masks are available at its main office, the YMCA in Santa Ynez, and local public libraries—they will provide masks until supplies run out.  KEYT
  • The California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment has issued a fish consumption advisory for Cachuma Lake that limits safe-eating levels for black bass, Common Carp, and Threadfin Shad — due to mercury from historic mining and coal burning.
