- ➤ The Channel Islands YMCA Association concluded its 6th Annual Backpack Give Back drive on August 1—collecting over 1,100 backpacks from branches spanning Camarillo to San Luis Obispo—to support vulnerable youth during the school year. - ➤ PCPA invites young performers to audition for Disney’s Frozen at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 23 at its rehearsal studios at the Columbia Business Center in Santa Maria—auditionees must prepare 60 seconds of a song with sheet music and be ready for rehearsals starting September 23 for a fall run at Marian Theatre from November 6 to December 21. - ➤ Saturday marked day 9 of the Gifford Fire, which burned 104,402 acres and was 21% contained as firefighters battled hot, dry weather. Officials said flames advanced into the Garcia Wilderness — threatening the Machesna Mountain Wilderness — while crews reinforced control lines to keep the fire from spreading. KSBY
- ➤ The Santa Barbara County Association of Governments and the county completed broadband designs and an environmental review funded by a state grant to ready nine rural communities for last-mile fiber network construction — construction will begin once new state and federal funding is secured.
