COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sunkist is a one-month-old male Domestic Shorthair at Santa Barbara Humane’s Santa Maria Campus who is looking for a new family. He is available for meeting daily from 12:00pm to 4:30pm except Wednesdays and adoption includes a complimentary health exam + a starter bag of Purina food + discounted training class fees.  Edhat
  • The Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce will host the 32nd annual Goleta Lemon Festival on Sept. 27-28 at Girsh Park — the event will feature more than 80 booths, contests, live music, and a classic car show that will draw about 40,000 people. The festival, presented by Rusty’s Pizza, honors Goleta’s citrus heritage beginning with the area’s first commercial lemon orchard.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Gifford Fire burned over 114,621 acres on Sunday morning and firefighters worked in rugged terrain in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties to strengthen containment lines—more than 800 residents were evacuated and two structures were destroyed. Forecasts show temperatures rising into the 90s with northwesterly winds, which could further challenge containment efforts.  Noozhawk

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Cottage Children’s Medical Center—located at Cottage Hospital—joined the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Care Network to let Central Coast families receive more local pediatric specialty care. The hospitals will work together to coordinate treatments and follow-up visits if needed and plan to open a new clinic later this year.  Edhat
  • The Santa Barbara County Health Department said August is National Immunization Awareness Month and urged families to get vaccinated because vaccines protect people of all ages. Dr. Henning Ansorg said vaccines are rigorously tested and effective in stopping outbreaks—this effort helps keep our community safe.  Noozhawk

  • Dan McCaslin recounted a quiet hike along Naples Bluff on the Gaviota Coast where parking near Highway 101 leads to a steep trail down unlockable gates to a low-tide beach with vibrant tidepools and local birds - he also noted that the area still shows marks of early development attempts.  Noozhawk
  • The Department of Behavioral Wellness and Good Samaritan Shelter celebrated the one-year progress of La Posada Interim Housing Village— a project offering safe transitional housing and supportive services to help residents rebuild their lives.  Noozhawk

  • Returning starter Olivia Howard led the UCSB women’s soccer team to a 3—1 win over Trinity Western in a preseason exhibition match at Harder Stadium on Saturday night—she scored a goal and assisted. The team will open its season against Loyola Marymount Thursday at 7:30 p.m.  Noozhawk
