CRIME NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Police Department warned drivers on August 13 to avoid driving under the influence as families prepared for Labor Day celebrations; officers increased patrols and will monitor the streets until Labor Day (Sept. 1) to curb impaired driving.  Santa Barbara Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Acton Academy Santa Barbara will open its doors on September 2 as a new K to 5 microschool that uses student-led projects and Socratic circles for real-world learning. Enrollment is capped at 10 students—ensuring a close-knit and high-engagement setting for its first year.  Noozhawk
  • On Aug. 12, the Sheriff’s Office Programs Unit and Allan Hancock College celebrated 63 incarcerated students at the Northern Branch Jail (NBJ) for completing college-level courses. The program helps build skills for a stable future through education.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County will continue rental property inspections in Isla Vista even after the Isla Vista Rental Property Owners Association filed a lawsuit saying the ordinance violates tenant rights—this pilot program, funded with $600,000 from a settlement, requires a 15-day notice for inspections before fall classes begin.  KEYT
  • Goleta is extending Ekwill Street to add a road, sidewalks, and bikeway that will connect the airport and the university to the rest of the city. The project will link Fairview Avenue to South Kellogg by the end of 2026—after 20 years of planning and near an active UPS depot and Northrup Grumman site.  Santa Barbara Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Philip Ente of Lompoc Health has received a two-year grant from the Human-Animal Bond Research Institute to study if dogs can detect seizures by sensing specific odors, and he will recruit seven inpatients to provide samples every 15 minutes in the Cottage Hospital epilepsy monitoring unit—this research may help refine seizure alert dog training and spur new sensor technology.  Noozhawk
  • The Barbara County Health Department released its latest Birth Brief with local birth certificate data from 2020 to 2024, showing that in 2024 Santa Barbara had a fertility rate of 54 births per 1,000 women and marked differences in prenatal care and education across regions.
