- ➤ Award-winning actor, singer, and producer Cynthia Erivo will receive the 18th Kirk Douglas Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Dec. 4 at a black-tie dinner at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara (supporting the festival's education programs). - ➤ Congressman Salud Carbajal honored John Gherini for his work on the Santa Barbara Mission Archive-Library board. His 37-year tenure (from 1987 to Jan. 17) helped secure funding and preserve the community’s rich history. Noozhawk
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dos Pueblos High School received 276 transfer students from Santa Barbara and San Marcos as enrollment reached 2,238 today—making it the largest school in the district. The district closed transfer requests in April and some families who lost homes in the Pacific Palisades fire also joined the transfers. Noozhawk
- ➤ The Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara awarded a $25,000 grant to UCSB’s Research Mentorship Program to help high school students conduct university-level oncology research this summer—expanding access for underrepresented students. Edhat
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors approved the contract for Phase II of the Modoc Multi-use Path and construction is expected to begin this fall — extending an eight-mile Class I network from Isla Vista to Arroyo Burro Beach and connecting to the Obern Trail for safer travel by bicyclists and pedestrians. - ➤ The Santa Barbara District Attorney’s office settled a consumer protection lawsuit with HelloFresh for $7.5 million after the company enrolled consumers in auto-renewing subscriptions without clear consent. HelloFresh must pay civil penalties, investigative costs, and restitution for eligible consumers who enrolled from January 1st, 2019 to August 18th—ensuring that funds are directed as required. - ➤ Hospice of Santa Barbara will honor CenCal Health + YouthWell + Angel Flight West as its 2025 Heroes of Hospice award recipients at its 13th Annual Heroes of Hospice luncheon held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14 at the Rosewood Miramar Beach Resort in Montecito. The event will mark 51 years of care and feature keynote speaker David Kessler while presenting awards for medical leadership, youth mental wellness and volunteer service. Noozhawk
- ➤ The Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness is accepting applications for the annual John Kovacs Scholarship—designed for individuals facing mental health or substance use challenges. - ➤ Dr. Lynn Fitzgibbons was named the Craig Mally and Louise Stewart, MD, endowed chair in Graduate Medical Education by the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation—recognizing her role as director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program and her work in clinical research and public health.
