CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Dillon Johnson pleaded guilty on August 19 to involuntary manslaughter and drug charges after he sold fentanyl that led to Matthew Dyet’s overdose death on April 29, 2022—he will be sentenced on October 14. Santa Barbara Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Goleta will ask City Council in September to launch a capital campaign to fund interior improvements at the Goleta Valley Library since a $4.2 million grant did not cover design upgrades and new furniture. The city has started soliciting bids for construction work and will work with Friends of the Goleta Valley Library to add meeting pods, self-checkout stations and flexible seating—aiming to enhance accessibility and extend the building’s life by June 2027. - ➤ On August 19, Santa Barbara City Council voted 5—1 to loan $3.5 million for the Jacaranda Court apartment project at the corner of Castillo and Carrillo to create 63 units for moderate and low-income households. Mayor Randy Rowse questioned the decision given the city's earlier $7.5 million land donation—project planning continues with groundbreaking expected as early as November and completion in mid-2027.
