EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UCSB computer scientist Arpit Gupta earned two major awards from Google for his work on low-cost AI network models — recognition of his breakthrough research that bridges machine learning and computer networks. - ➤ The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors approved a $5.5 million contract for the final phase of the Modoc Road multi-use path project, which will start in October and complete a route connecting Isla Vista, Arroyo Burro Beach & Santa Barbara. Granite Construction Co. will start work with a 120-day timeline as traffic detours may be arranged closer to the project start. Noozhawk
- ➤ Santa Barbara has hired Anthony Valdez as deputy city administrator, with his role beginning Sept. 15—he will consolidate programs from Public Works and Community Development to address housing, homelessness, and downtown revitalization. - ➤ Covered California said that in 2026, premiums will go up by about 10.3% because health care costs are rising and enhanced federal subsidies will end soon — many enrollees in our region may pay more or switch to cheaper plans if Congress does not renew the help.
