  • Local and federal officials warn that fraudsters are tricking homeowners with zombie loans, deed theft, and vacant lot scams. A district attorney’s office representative will lead a discussion on Thursday, August 28 at 6 p.m. to share steps like verifying seller records—tips meant to help protect property owners.  KEYT

  • Santa Barbara Unified has named Carlos Vazquez as the new Student Board Member for the 2025-2026 school year. The senior from San Marcos High School—who has held key leadership roles—will work to bring student views into better school policies.  Edhat

  • The City of Santa Barbara has named Anthony Valdez as its first Deputy City Administrator and he will take office on September 15. He brings over 10 years of leadership experience and will merge housing, community services, and downtown programs—helping the city address key challenges.  Edhat

HEALTH NEWS

  • CenCal Health recently awarded 16 grants totaling $5,542,406 to 31 local providers to expand access to primary, pediatric, behavioral, and specialty care in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties (with $2,421,242 allocated locally) as part of its Capacity Grants program. This funding will support hiring 34 health professionals and enhance service capacity in the region.  Santa Barbara Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bishop Diego football earned a 42-40 win over Lancaster Friday night as coach Tom Crawford became Santa Barbara County's winningest coach with his 172nd victory, and the team will face West Ranch in a non-league contest next Friday at 7 p.m.  Noozhawk
  • Bishop Diego girls’ volleyball beat Santa Barbara High 11-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-22. The victory marked their first win over the public school since 1975—led by strong play from Sophia Ott who made a career high 16 kills.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • San Marcos football gained a 35 to 0 win over Del Sol on Friday at Warkentin Stadium — Cole Dominguez scored early touchdowns and the defense made a key interception that set up additional scores by Brody Green, Isaac Murillo, and Tommy Diaz.
