COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mission Hope Cancer Center held its 12th annual Day of Hope event with two car shows on Saturday+ one at Heritage Square Park in Arroyo Grande and one in Santa Maria, where all proceeds supported local cancer patients. Organizers said the car shows preceded a larger fundraiser that will be held on Wednesday and featured classic and custom cars along with free activities.  KSBY
  • One hundred students from Cleveland Elementary School will start school with new clothes, backpacks and supplies provided by a partnership that includes Kiwanis of Santa Barbara, Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise and local stores—Old Navy opened early for private shopping and added extra funds for each student.  Edhat

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A travel trailer caught fire at a campsite near Cachuma Lake on August 22 at 1:46 p.m., injuring one person and prompting the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and Los Padres Forest Service to contain the blaze—an investigator was dispatched to determine the cause.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Noon Concert at Trinity will feature jazz musicians John and Maya Proulx at Trinity Episcopal Church from 12:15-12:45 p.m. on Sept. 5, with doors opening at 11:45 a.m. and a $10 suggested donation — future concerts by Thomas Joyce on Oct. 10 and by Kate Wallace with Doug Clegg on Nov. 14 will add more music options.  Noozhawk
  • Local historian Betsy J. Green will discuss how the Channel Islands once served as a backdrop for over 250 silent films at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18, and a pre-lecture reception (6:15-6:45 p.m.) for members will be held before the talk; ticket prices are free for Navigators Circle, $10 for SBMM members, $20 for the public, and $5 for students and educators.  Noozhawk

  • Jose Bustos, a local artist who began his art journey at Arthur Hapgood Elementary in 1992, returned to paint six new murals — a project that includes a celestial-themed piece with affirmations in English and Spanish — to honor the school’s dual immersion program and inspire students.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County supervisors reduced allowed cannabis cultivation acreage in Carpinteria Valley by 52 acres and in unincorporated areas by 158 acres to counter falling tax revenue and rising odor complaints. The board also required operators to install carbon scrubbers and undergo more frequent—unannounced inspections to address local odor issues.  Noozhawk

  • Hospice of Santa Barbara announced its 2025 Heroes of Hospice awards to honor key community contributors: CenCal Health for healthcare access, YouthWell for youth mental health help, and Angel Flight West for volunteer transportation. They will be celebrated at the 13th Annual luncheon on Sunday, September 14 at Rosewood Miramar Beach Resort from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM—best-selling author David Kessler will deliver the keynote speech.  Edhat

  • Local culinary leaders Ryan Simorangkir and Tyler Peek launched Woody’s Southern Chicken at the Lama Dog Tap Room + Bottle Shop at 3435 State St., where a pop-up for fried chicken every other Wednesday debuted on August 6.
