  • Groucho is a 4-month-old male cat at the Santa Maria Campus who came to SB Humane looking for a caring home. Adoptions are open daily from 12-4:30 p.m. except Wednesdays and adopters will receive a free vet exam plus a supply of food when he is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tar has been on Goleta beaches for thousands of years because natural oil seeps and early Native Americans used it to seal canoes & make items waterproof. Later, explorers and oil companies added to its presence with trading, mining, and spills in 1969 and 2015 that shaped local attitudes toward the oil industry.  Edhat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The SBUnified PEAC Summer Institute, now in its 13th year, provided first-generation students with summer college courses, research at UCSB, and an international leadership conference to help them prepare for higher education — opportunities organized by local community partners including Santa Barbara City College and UCSB.  Edhat
  • UCSB computer scientist Arpit Gupta earned a Google Research Scholar Award and a Google ML and Systems Junior Faculty Award—honors that help support his work to build low-cost network foundation models which will make AI systems more accessible. His research uses the convergence principle to create self-driving networks that can manage many tasks more efficiently.  Edhat

  • Santa Barbara Police Department advises drivers to slow down, obey speed limits, and stop for buses in school zones during Back-to-School Month — a measure aimed at protecting children as they prepare to return to school.  Edhat

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High boys water polo teams completed the Arroyo Grande Tournament on Saturday in Arroyo Grande; Dos Pueblos won their games with 13-7 and 17-11 scores while Santa Barbara High lost 7-6 to Righetti and 13-8 to San Luis Obispo High. Santa Barbara High will play Carpinteria High Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.—Dos Pueblos' wins followed strong freshman efforts.  Noozhawk
  • Local high school girls volleyball teams competed on Saturday at the Brick House and Page Youth Center in the Cardinal Classic hosted by Bishop Diego—Cate led its playoff bracket while the Rams rallied from an 0-2 start to win the Silver Division consolation title. Other teams, including Santa Barbara High, played in varied pools against opponents from nearby communities.  Noozhawk
  • Matt Jones begins his third season as UCSB women’s volleyball head coach, making history as the first man in the role and preparing a mix of new recruits and returning players for matches on Friday and Saturday at San Jose State—he aims to build a balanced team for conference play.  Noozhawk
  • Carpinteria High boys water polo finished their season opener with a 3-1 record at the Thousand Oaks tournament this past weekend—winning three games and losing one close match.
