  • Habit Burger and Grill started a new ad campaign that shows its #1 rank in a USA TODAY poll and calls out In-N-Out for dropping to 4th with a billboard near LAX's drive-thru. The campaign builds on the restaurant’s history dating back to its opening in Santa Barbara in 1969—its first store—and aims to boost its local standing.  Edhat

CRIME NEWS

  • On Aug. 21, law enforcement agencies including the CHP and several county teams arrested three armed felony suspects in Santa Barbara—recovering several loaded semi-automatic handguns with extended magazines and an assault rifle after stopping two men at a bus station and searching an Isla Vista apartment.  KSBY

  • Japanese Breakfast delivered a captivating concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl on August 23 with Michelle Zauner leading the show and a set that mixed new songs from For Melancholy Brunettes with earlier hits—layered sounds and vivid visuals created a memorable, dreamlike experience for the audience.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • At UCSB, the AD&A Museum presents three free fall exhibitions—Beyond the Object featuring recent acquisitions, a tribute to Joan Mitchell, and Mexican Prints from local donor gifts—which will run from Sept 13 to Dec 7 with an opening reception at 5:30 p.m. on Sept 13. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.  Noozhawk
  • The Santa Barbara Public Library introduced its second annual Raíces y Sueños series to celebrate Hispanic culture with free family events that will run from September to mid October—featuring art receptions, mobile library stops, bilingual storytelling and interactive workshops. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors approved a $6.5 million contract on August 19 to build the final mile of the Modoc Road Multi-Use bike and pedestrian path connecting Isla Vista to Santa Barbara — the project is set to begin this fall and will preserve the historic Canary Island palms and Modoc Preserve while completing an eight-mile network.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office and partners will host a free Clean Slate Clinic on August 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—offering legal help for criminal record expungement, felony reduction, and arrest record sealing for eligible residents. The event will take place at The Colleges of Law campus at 20 East Victoria Street to remove barriers to employment and housing.  Edhat
  • The California DOJ reprimanded Santa Barbara Sheriff Bill Brown for failing to fully report the transfer of undocumented inmates to ICE under conflicting state laws, showing 37 transfers between 2000 and 2024 that were misreported. Brown agreed to submit amended documents within 30 days after receiving a letter from the state Attorney General's office on August 4th—though the legal definition of 'transfer' remains unresolved.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • People Assisting the Homeless will close its shelter at 816 Cacique Street on December 31 after a decade of operation on the city’s industrial Eastside. City Hall is negotiating to purchase the building, which carries a $3.2 million debt and a covenant requiring its use for shelter services until 2049 — officials have not yet disclosed further details.  Santa Barbara Independent
