  • On August 19, United Way of Santa Barbara County hosted a childcare panel at the County Education Office where over 40 local leaders heard from experts at Patagonia, Cottage Health, and UC Santa Barbara about the economic impact of childcare. City of Goleta Councilmember James Kyriaco moderated the discussion that examined ways to expand access to quality childcare and support working families — actions that strengthen local economic stability.  Edhat
  • Community members will join the Alianza Campesina Winery March tomorrow in Los Olivos from noon to 2 p.m.—demanding a living wage for farmworkers who help support our $70 million wine industry, organizers said.  Noozhawk

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County lost 15% of its 25- to 45-year-olds over the past 20 years and may lose another 15% in the next 10 to 15 years due to a shortage of houses + rising economic pressures. County leaders said they plan to add 7,200 new units with many affordable options and noted that tariffs are hurting the local wine industry.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara County Education Office has named six educators as the 2026 Distinguished Mentors and Distinguished New Educators for their leadership and care in local schools. They will be recognized at the A Salute to Teachers gala in October — an event that will also honor Teacher of the Year and Performing Arts Teacher of the Year.  Edhat
  • On August 12, the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara held a four-hour FAFSA testing workshop at Santa Maria High School Library—104 participants including 94 seniors took part—and local education officials and school counselors supported the event.  Edhat

  • On August 23, Santa Barbara Zoo supporters gathered for the Out of This World Ball at the zoo’s hilltop—raising about $700,000. New President/CEO Charles Hopper said the money will help the zoo start a 10,000 square foot Conservation Center at CSU Channel Islands and make the zoo easier to visit.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara County unveiled a draft Environmental Justice Element that aims to reduce pollution and improve air quality and access to services in communities including Casmalia, Cuyama, and Isla Vista—public input will be gathered at a hearing on October 8 before the plan is sent to the Board of Supervisors.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Cristino’s Bakery is a small takeaway shop at 170 Aero Camino near the airport, owned by Lorena Casas who became sole owner in 2023 and now runs the bakery with care.
