  • MOXI opened its new Quiet Cave on the museum's second floor to give visitors a calm break from busy exhibits—this sensory-friendly room has soft lighting, a reading library, and tactile elements. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Gifford Fire was 97% contained by Friday near the Santa Barbara border as 1,242 firefighters handled high heat in the Garcia Wilderness. Crews have shifted to restoring bulldozed and hand-cut line areas—pulling over 150 miles of fire hose—to prepare for winter rains.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The Sustainability and Resilience Department and MarBorg Industries are hosting a free household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, September 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Santa Barbara City College’s Lot 2-C—residents can drop off items such as batteries, paint, and cleaning supplies after previous events saw 14.7 tons of waste disposed of safely.  Edhat

  • At Bacara on August 28, the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce held its fifth annual State of the County event where housing was a key focus; County Executive Officer Mona Miyasato said only 5 percent of the land is available for new development (460 housing units have been approved with 7,200 more planned) to meet state goals.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • The Pacific West Region of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America will host the Team Hope Walk at Ledbetter Park on September 6th with registration at 9:00 a.m. and the walk starting at 9:30 a.m.—all proceeds will support those affected by Huntington’s disease.  Santa Barbara Independent
