COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County Animal Services is asking the community to foster or adopt about 50 dogs as shelters undergo major renovations to improve care spaces. The Lompoc shelter will temporarily limit capacity to 20 dogs and the Santa Barbara shelter to 30 dogs from August 27 to September 30—steps intended to reduce animal stress during the updates.  Edhat
  • Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden received a $260,000 upgrade from a federal Community Development Block Grant to improve safety and accessibility—crews removed uneven pathways, added handrails, and restored both original and native plants in collaboration with the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. The city will also host a Volunteer Appreciation Day on Saturday, Sept. 6 to honor local helpers.  Noozhawk

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A motorcycle crash on Highway 154 near San Marcos Pass at Painted Cave Road left the rider with serious injuries — lanes were blocked — as emergency crews worked to secure the area.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians donated three original acrylic paintings to the Buellton Library on Friday to honor their heritage—featuring works like 'Salmon and Coyote' that retell traditional stories in a modern style. Local artist Bobby Duran and tribal youth created the vibrant pieces that now enhance the library's new facility.  Noozhawk
  • Oak and Fire BBQ is a local catering business that serves Santa Maria-style grilling with dishes like tri-tip and seafood at events around Santa Barbara. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Goleta Council will vote on whether to demolish the disrepair caretaker cottage at Stow Grove Park — the structure no longer meets accessibility standards — and on installing a prefabricated restroom in a sensitive environmental zone.   • Chef Danny Grant and executive chef Sam Garcia opened coastal Italian restaurant Marisella at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara in Goleta, serving dishes like slow-roasted lamb ragu pasta and filet mignon.   • UCSB volleyball hit a .453 team average to win 25-17, 25-19, 30-28 over San Jose State on Saturday, completing a two-match sweep. Coach Matt Jones said the team showed a balanced offensive attack and the Gauchos will face USC, Creighton and University at San Diego next weekend.  Noozhawk
  • UC Santa Barbara water polo split two games at the Triton Invitational on Saturday, beating LaVerne 23-7 before losing 16-10 to USC—Danilo Dragovic led the scoring as players posted hat-tricks. The team will play No. 20 Navy at 8:00 a.m. and Pomona-Pitzer at 1:20 p.m. today at the Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla.  Noozhawk
