  • Santa Barbara community members will join Protest Thursdays: Supporting the Constitution, a weekly rally held from 4-6 p.m. at Anacapa and Anapamu streets—organizers invite families, students, and workers to lend their voices and signs to support the Constitution.  Noozhawk
  • Leslie is a 5 month old Domestic Shorthair at the Santa Maria Campus available for adoption from SB Humane daily between 12 and 4:30 p.m. He is shy and playful — he likes high spots and wand play, and his adopters will receive a free veterinary exam certificate plus a food supply from Purina when he is adopted.  Edhat

CRIME NEWS

  • Santa Maria police responded to a shooting in the 500 block of E. El Camino on August 29 and deployed a SWAT team at a nearby residence, but suspect Severiano Leon Flores, who is wanted on outstanding warrants and considered armed, remains at large.  Edhat

  • The long-running Las Vegas act Popovich Comedy Pet Theater will perform at the Marjorie Luke Theatre in Santa Barbara at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19—featuring a blend of circus acts, comedy and rescued pets to promote adoption.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews increased the Gifford Fire containment to 97% this week and began moving most personnel to the northern burn scar for damage assessments. Officials in Los Padres National Forest and Caltrans are repairing Highway 166—replacing culverts and checking guardrails—as they work to prevent post-fire flooding and debris flows.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NSF renewed a $19.8M award for BioPACIFIC MIP—a UCSB and UCLA partnership focused on AI-driven biomaterials research—to boost autonomous experimentation and train new scientists in its final five-year phase. The program will bridge synthetic biology with chemistry to drive sustainable innovations across the nation.  Edhat
  • On August 29, the federal Office of Management and Budget restored funding for the AmeriCorps program so that case workers in Santa Barbara who help veterans and homeless people can continue their work after layoffs in April. Local partners and the United Way kept 25 volunteers on duty and will begin a new service year with orientations in mid-September — a move expected to help over 2,000 people each year.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • On July 25, Congressman Salud Carbajal honored John Gherini for 37 years of service as President of the Board at Santa Barbara Mission Archive-Library, a key resource of California Mission records. His leadership helped secure funding and vital collections — the Archive-Library later named its exhibit space the Gherini Gallery in his honor.  Edhat

  • Shane Bieber made his season debut for the Toronto Blue Jays on August 22 at Miami’s LoanDepot Park—pitching six innings, allowing one run and striking out nine in a 5—2 win—while his wife Kara and 5—month—old son Kav watched.
