- ➤ Last July, Veggie Rescue delivered 87,664 pounds of surplus food to nonprofits and churches in Santa Barbara County—providing about 73,000 meals and preventing 358,000 pounds of waste. The nonprofit works with local farms, bakeries, and businesses to quickly transport extra produce to community organizations during a time of rising food insecurity. Santa Barbara Independent
- ➤ The Santa Barbara Foundation and Children's Resource and Referral of Santa Barbara County have received a $550,000 grant from Uplift Central Coast to expand child care spaces and help child care workers in the region. The project builds on earlier ARPA funding and will offer provider grants plus training in several languages over the next 18 months (creating more than 570 new licensed spaces across the area). - ➤ This September the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County has joined Feeding America for Hunger Action Month to raise awareness about hunger in a county where many families struggle. The group asks neighbors to donate, dine out, and volunteer while it holds Hunger Action Day on September 9 and starts its new Farm to Foodbank program—helping local farmers and families. - ➤ Santa Barbara District Attorney John T. Savrnoch announced that amended charges following an August 1 State Street stabbing alter the case against Juan Fernando Rios, Sergio Rivas, and Luis Gerardo Terrazo—new video evidence shows that Rios and Rivas acted in self-defense while Terrazo now faces assault charges instead of attempted murder—and all three will be arraigned on September 8 at 8:30 a.m. in Department 12 of Santa Barbara Superior Court. - ➤ On Saturday, August 30, sheriff’s deputies arrested 22-year-old Damian Silverio in Isla Vista on felony charges including rape by force or fear, kidnap to commit rape, and false imprisonment after an assault survivor reported hours-long physical and sexual assault in a Trigo Road apartment, and he is held without bail.
