COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last Saturday, over 20 locations in the county hosted the seventh annual Farm Day where visitors toured working farms, tasted fresh food, and saw how farmers care for the land. Organized by SEEAG (Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture), the event also let high school students share hands-on skills with FFA (Future Farmers of America) programs.  Noozhawk

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On September 5 at 6:54 p.m., a crash on Highway 246 near Buellton killed one person and injured two as firefighters responded and the California Highway Patrol investigated the scene—one lane remains closed.  Edhat

  • Santa Barbara Sheriff Deputies arrested three men for felony organized retail theft after they stole $1,900 in perfume and cologne from Ulta Beauty in Goleta on September 5—deputies tracked a red sedan exuding a strong scent to a stop near the Castillo Street off-ramp.  Edhat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Unified has seen a steady decline in enrollment over the past decade—dropping from 15,593 students in 2015 to 13,336 now—while the share of socioeconomically disadvantaged students has risen from 52% to 61%. At Santa Barbara Junior High, enrollment fell from 759 to 502, but proactive outreach and new programs are expected to raise numbers to nearly 570 next year.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • A UCSB study warns that human actions like ocean warming, overfishing and pollution will almost double their impact on seas by 2050 — a change that may harm coastal areas and marine life.   • Pacific Surfliner and California Operation Lifesaver are partnering during Rail Safety Month to deliver safety tips for travelers along the Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo corridor—local officials are also placing signage near schools and busy areas. SPORTS NEWS

  • Carpinteria High football team won 52-7 in their season opener on Friday in Oxnard. Quarterback Isaac Neri and special teams standout Drew Filippini scored key touchdowns—helping the Warriors prepare to host San Gabriel next Friday at 7 p.m.  Noozhawk
  • The SBCC women’s water polo team started their season at the Central Coast Invitational—winning four games against Golden West, Cuesta, Orange Coast, and West Valley while showing strong offense and defense. They will travel next weekend to Orange Coast College to play Long Beach City in a championship rematch.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara City College’s women’s volleyball team swept El Camino College 3-0 on Friday as they won 10 straight sets—showing strong play from Bayley Padia and steady leadership from coach Kat Niksto. The Vaqueros will travel to face Pasadena City College on Wednesday.  Noozhawk
