  • On August 22, SBCE announced $30,000 in grants to five local nonprofits to strengthen the region’s food system and support culinary education—grant awards include $5,000 for four organizations and $10,000 for Edible Schoolyard. CRIME NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office arrested three suspects after a retail theft at Ulta Beauty in the Camino Real Marketplace in Goleta+ they recovered about $1,900 in stolen fragrances from a red sedan near the Castillo Street off-ramp.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum invites ocean lovers and trivia buffs to join Kelp Forest Trivia Night at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 at Night Lizard Brewing Company on State St.—the event is free and will donate $1 from each pint sold to support the museum while teams compete for marine-themed prizes.  Noozhawk
  • The Santa Barbara Surf Museum opened Sept. 3 at Surf N’ Wear’s Beach House on lower State Street—showing local surf memorabilia and honoring the retirement of legendary shaper Renny Yater.   • Crews removed parklets from one block of State St between Cota and Haley on Friday afternoon as part of a restoration project, and the city will install pedlets by Thursday to create a dedicated pedestrian area—costing $580,000 for the trial effort.  KEYT
  • City Council Member James Kyriaco is introducing new tenant protections in Goleta—aimed at helping renters amid rising homelessness—by requiring 120 days' notice for no-fault evictions and two months of relocation assistance. The temporary ordinance will become permanent at the council meeting on Tuesday, September 16.  KEYT
  • Transportation planner Mia Lewis demonstrated Santa Barbara County’s new interactive housing dashboard that gives users access to housing, workforce, and demographic data. The system covers nine key areas including RHNA targets — and it will be updated twice a year.  KEYT
  • The City of Santa Barbara has hired Michael Arnoldus as its new human resources director—he will begin on Sept. 22 and bring experience from Santa Monica and Ventura County to guide city HR programs.  Noozhawk
