- ➤ David Obst—80 years old and from Santa Barbara—has released his new book Saving Ourselves from Big Car that explains how leaded gas caused serious health risks and environmental problems. - ➤ A state bill proposed on Monday would require the eight-story apartment project at 505 E. Los Olivos—located behind the Santa Barbara Mission and set to bring 270 apartments, including 54 affordable units—to complete an environmental review if passed. - ➤ On Thursday, September 11 at 9:00 a.m., the Santa Barbara County Fire Department held a ceremony at all 16 stations—lowering the American flag to half-staff and observing a moment of silence to honor those lost on 9/11, including 343 firefighters and many civilians. - ➤ County supervisors approved a $1.5 million loan to fund the Mission Hills affordable housing project near Lompoc with 49 units planned; the county loan at 3 percent interest over 20 years will help cover the $51.6 million cost—expenses rose with higher labor and material prices. - ➤ The UC Santa Barbara Women’s Soccer team defeated the University of New Mexico 2-0 at Harder Stadium on Thursday evening—both goals came in the second half. - ➤ Westmont Women’s Soccer lost by a score of 4 to 1 to Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday afternoon at home after an early goal gave them hope but could not stop the Broncos from scoring a penalty and additional goals. Head coach Lauren Matthias said the team showed promise but must work on its defense and physical play — Westmont will host California Lutheran in an exhibition game on Saturday before traveling for its next match on September 20. - ➤ Carpinteria High’s cross country team ran in the first Citrus Coast League cluster meet at Arroyo Verde Park on Thursday—girls finished third and boys finished fourth overall.
