  • The Santa Barbara community will honor organ donors at the 10th Annual OneLegacy Organ Donation Celebration Walk & BBQ on Sept. 20 from 2-5 p.m. at Leadbetter Beach (the two-mile walk begins at 3 p.m. and will include music, remembrance activities, and a community BBQ) as organizers pay tribute to nurse Vivian Beutel and others saved by organ donation.  Noozhawk
  • Mary Jane McCord Planned Parenthood Book Sale opened on Thursday at the Earl Warren Showgrounds—running through Sept.21 and drawing over 600 shoppers on opening day. The event, organized by about 200 volunteers, supports services for 30,000 people while attracting buyers from across the region.  Noozhawk

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Friday afternoon, crews battled a vegetation fire along the 5700 to 5800 blocks of Telephone Road east of Orcutt—threatening one house near a vineyard as firefighters deployed aircraft and ground teams to contain the blaze and secure downed power lines.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara business news shows Jensen Music closing after 52 years at De La Vina Street—the store will continue repairs and consignment on Fridays, while in Goleta Medical Billing Technologies acquired SIRAS Systems and B. Braun bought True Digital Surgery to boost tech services. The updates also include the MedCenter staying open, a Halloween pop-up by World of Magic on State Street, Charles Fazzino’s new 3D Studio Gallery downtown, a literary partnership between Godmothers Bookstore and Rosewood Miramar Beach, and Hotel Santa Barbara finishing renovations with a new lobby bar called 1926.  Edhat

CRIME NEWS

  • UCSB graduate Kaitlyn McQuown is preparing to run the NYC Marathon on November 2 with Team Sandy Hook Promise—she will dedicate each of the 26 miles to a victim of the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting. The runner, who was studying at UCSB during the Isla Vista massacre, says her training raises awareness about gun violence and supports efforts like California’s red flag law.  Santa Barbara Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • On September 4, 2025, the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis celebrated its 30th anniversary at Santa Barbara’s First Thursday Art Walk with an art—science show that let visitors taste gelato pieces tied to nature’s changes. The event featured Artist-in-Residence Beth Ames Altringer Eagle, whose work used iceplant-dusted strawberry gelato to show how small shifts in nature can tell big stories.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Santa Barbara named Brian D’Amour as Public Works Director—he will manage road work, building upkeep, and capital projects while a new water department led by Joshua Haggmark will handle water supply and wastewater services. The City Council will review the employment agreements on September 16 and the new roles will start on September 22.  Edhat
  • The City of Santa Barbara built a new pedlet walking path on State St—between Cota St. and Haley St. in downtown after removing parklets and power washing the area. Final touches were added with wheelchair ramps, benches, and a cleared space that now lets nearby restaurants use tables and chairs while only umbrellas are allowed.  KEYT
  • Today, SpaceX will launch its Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base at Space Launch Complex-4 between 8:41 a.m. and 12:41 p.m. to send 24 Starlink satellites into orbit — the booster on its 28th flight will land on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship in the Pacific Ocean.  Noozhawk
  • County of Santa Barbara celebrated its 175th anniversary by adopting a new ceremonial resolution design created by local artist Aiden Khuiphum—selected from a contest with over 40 entries and awarded $1,000—during a Board of Supervisors meeting on September 9; his artwork, inspired by local landscapes and wildlife such as quail and egret, will appear on official documents throughout the anniversary year.  Edhat
  • A majority of Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District operators and operations supervisors approved a tentative three-year contract that will give an 11.25% wage increase, and the transit board will vote on the agreement on Sep. 16—Teamsters Local 186 represented the workers.   • The City of Santa Barbara has named Brandon Beaudette as Library Director effective September 22—he served as Acting Library Director since April 2024 and will now manage the library system’s daily operations and budget with community partners.  Edhat

  • At Santa Barbara Golf Club, Scott Anderson led the 2025 Santa Barbara Senior Open after shooting a three-under-par 67 on Thursday—Brian Smyth and Steve McPherson trailed, and the tournament concluded on Friday.  Noozhawk
  • On Friday, Dos Pueblos football dominated Del Sol with a 56-0 win at Scott O’Leary Stadium in Goleta. The Chargers, now 2-2, delivered strong plays with two touchdowns by Micah Barnhart and will face Ventura High next Friday at 7 p.m.  Noozhawk
  • The No. 19 UCSB men’s water polo team toured Southern California on Friday in Thousand Oaks, losing to Stanford after a slow start—winning 24-13 over Cal Lutheran. Redshirt freshman goalie Haakon Lacy made key penalty saves in both games, and the team will finish its tour in Los Angeles today as it faces Brown and LMU.  Noozhawk
