- ➤ The Santa Barbara Public Library’s Children’s Library is 10 years old this September—growing from serving 3,700 children to reaching over 39,000. Families can join the birthday bash on Saturday, September 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Central Library for crafts, games, and treats. Santa Barbara Independent

- ➤ Beth Olson, director of sales at Visit Santa Barbara, was honored with the Smart Women in Meetings Award—she accepted it at a gala in Tampa after being chosen as one of 100 women worldwide. Noozhawk

- ➤ Brenda and Mark Anderson have been named grand marshals for 2025 Solvang Danish Days scheduled for Sept. 19—21, and they bring deep Scandinavian roots to the festival. The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 20 along First Street near Molle Way — marking a local celebration. Noozhawk
- ➤ The California Rangeland Trust will hold its annual gala, A Western Affair, on Oct. 4th at Rancho Santa Barbara. The event will honor ranching families and raise funds to conserve working lands. Noozhawk
- ➤ On September 4, Flamenco! Santa Barbara held an intimate flamenco performance at the Covarrubias Adobe in the Santa Barbara Historic Museum. The concert featured guest artists from Spain and Mexico like singer Pepele Méndez, guitarist Pablo Heredía, flautist Gabriel Rodriguez and dancer Marién Luévano—each blending traditional and modern flamenco styles. - ➤ The UCSB museum opened an exhibit called 'Mexican Prints: The Garcia-Correa Collection' featuring 31 prints and art pieces donated by community leader Gil Garcia and his wife—works that honor the heritage of migrant farmworkers. - ➤ SBCC's Theatre Group is in its 80th season and will perform Arms and the Man from Oct. 8—25 at the Garvin Theatre on West Campus, a play about Raina Petkoff choosing between two men during a wartime setting. - ➤ The Santa Barbara Education Foundation named Brett Larsen as its teacher representative on the Board of Directors. Larsen is a music teacher from Santa Barbara Unified with 15 years of experience (holding degrees from UC Santa Barbara and California Lutheran) and he said he will work to support local arts education. - ➤ On Sept 10, Storyteller opened two new therapeutic playgrounds at its State Street campus to replace nearly 20-year-old equipment and offer safe play spaces for preschool and toddler students facing adversity in Santa Barbara — Executive Director Gabriella Garcia and local leaders held a ribbon cutting with grant support from the Audrey Hillman-Fisher Foundation. - ➤ The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum will host the Girls in Ocean Science Conference Sept. 27—28, offering middle school students hands-on lab activities and high school students field research at sea with local marine experts. - ➤ Nineteen volunteers from Santa Barbara Channelkeeper and local groups removed 650 pounds of trash and fishing gear from Chinese Harbor on Santa Cruz Island and Driftwood Cove on Anacapa Island using kayaks and a skiff—an effort to protect fragile island ecosystems. The cleanup, part of the sixth annual event, included partners such as Island Packers, Santa Barbara Adventure Company, Commercial Fishermen, NOAA, and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.
