COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 10th Annual Lemon Run will take place Sunday, Sept. 21 at Lake Los Carneros and is organized by the Goleta Education Foundation to support all nine elementary schools in the district. Runners and walkers can join the 10K Grand Prix at 8 a.m., the 5K Jr. Grand Prix at 9:30 a.m., and the 1K Fun Run at 10:30 a.m. — local businesses will provide prizes and activities.  Noozhawk
  • Goleta will begin Creek Week this Saturday 20 with activities that include beach and stream cleanups, large item drop-offs, nature walks, and an art contest—all meant to help locals learn about and care for our waterways—organizers ask residents to join in across various parts of the community.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Local reporter Alma Trejo-Rodriguez reported that Santa Barbara will celebrate its 26th annual Creek Week from Sept. 20 to Sept. 27 — a week filled with events that promote community sustainability. CRIME NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office filed criminal charges against Houston-based Sable Offshore on September 16 for alleged felony and misdemeanor violations during repair work to restart oil production—charges include five felony counts for discharging pollutants and 16 misdemeanor counts for obstructing streambeds, with arraignment set for November 4.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fellowship for Performing Arts will show The Screwtape Letters at the Granada Theatre on Saturday, October 4 at 4 p.m.—a play based on CS Lewis’s book that shifts its World War II setting to address modern terror.   • The Masq(p)arade! performance returns downtown Santa Barbara on October 3rd from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with regional artists hosting short piano shows every 15 minutes along State Street.   • Solvang is hosting its 88th annual Danish Days festival from today through Sunday with three parades, traditional food, live entertainment and hands-on cultural experiences — including a Viking encampment—that celebrate Danish heritage.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara Surf Film Festival will return for its fifth year at the Lobero Theatre on September 26 and 27—featuring films that celebrate California surf culture and honor local legends like Matt Moore. EDUCATION NEWS

  • City National Bank and United Way teamed up on September 17 to distribute backpacks and school supplies to students at Franklin Elementary School for the start of the school year — part of a long-term partnership that has provided over 1,700 backpacks in more than 10 years. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Travelers near Guadalupe will face a daytime lane closure on Highway 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, September 22 as crews remove trees in preparation for an upcoming shoulder widening project—lane closures are expected to end mid-October if weather permits.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Crews are replacing a drainage culvert under the southbound lanes of US 101 near Dos Pueblos Canyon in Goleta—forcing the closure of lane 1 24 hours a day through mid-October and causing up to 15 minute delays for travelers. Brough Construction will begin closing lane 2 once work on lane 1 finishes.  Edhat
  • First 5 del Condado de Santa Bárbara launched its new Programa de Liderazgo Alineado para Obtener Resultados to build leadership and promote equity for children from prenatal to age five (35 participants from 22 agencies) yesterday. The program will run for 13 months until September and includes 14 sessions that focus on data-driven decisions and collaborative actions.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Leslie Sokol leads dance and fitness classes to help Santa Barbara seniors keep their muscles active for strength, balance and heart health (a key benefit as muscles weaken with age).  Noozhawk

  • Westmont Women's Volleyball defeated Concordia in a four-set match at their home gym in Santa Barbara—coach Ruth McGolpin noted standout Maddie Finnegan earned 17 kills as the Warriors rallied for the win, and they will face Biola at 6:00 p.m. tonight in La Mirada.  Noozhawk
