  • The Santa Barbara Police Activities League held a ribbon cutting event for the re-opening of the Twelve35 Teen Center on September 16 at 1235 Chapala Street in downtown Santa Barbara. Chief of Police Kelly Gordon and student designer Rebecca Barreto joined community members to show the updated space with a Welcome Center, Educational Kitchen, Lounge and Recreation Zones, and a Multipurpose Room — a project backed by local partners such as the Women's Fund and the Parks & Recreation Department.  Edhat
  • Children’s Resource & Referral invites the community to a Party with a Purpose Benefit Concert today at The Blast Stockyard in Orcutt to support children entering emergency foster care in Santa Barbara County — LA’s Bullfrogg Blues Band will play live music and local food from Blast 825 will be served with proceeds helping supply comfort items at the Heart to Home Resource Closet.  Noozhawk

  • The Downtown Santa Barbara Improvement Association will hold a ribbon-cutting event at its new office at 415 State St.—with an annual meeting starting at 3:30 p.m. and a tour following the 4:30 p.m. ribbon cutting on Sept. 25, where plans for downtown cleanliness, safety, and communication will be shared.  Noozhawk
  • SpaceX launched its Falcon 9 rocket at 9:32 a.m. on Friday from Vandenberg Space Force Base — carrying 24 Starlink satellites after delays due to Tropical Storm Mario — and residents may have heard sonic booms.   • Bree’Osh Bakery, owned by husband and wife Pierre-Yves Henry and Nelly Mousseau, will celebrate 10 years of French baked goods on September 26 at their De la Vina location—featuring craft cocktails, house-made bites, music, and a new panettone masterclass. CRIME NEWS

  • Santa Barbara District Attorney John Savrnoch charged Sable Offshore with 21 counts for unauthorized repairs on a pipeline tied to the 2015 Refugio Oil Spill — the charges include felonies for discharging pollutants and misdemeanors for harming creeks, and Sable claims the move is a politically motivated attack while the case is set for a Nov. 4 hearing in Superior Court.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • The Santa Barbara Public Library is celebrating Hispanic immigrant culture with its second annual Raíces y Sueños series that offers free music, storytelling, art and hands-on workshops through mid-October—highlighting events such as an art reception with artist Jacqueline Valenzuela and a lowrider culture celebration with Poet Laureate Melinda Palacio.  KEYT

  • A study from UC Santa Barbara showed that kelp forests and nearby beaches are closely connected—beaches within 10 kilometers receive the most kelp wrack, which supports local food webs.   • A UCSB study revealed that kelp forests along the Santa Barbara Channel connect with local sandy beaches, with beaches within 10 kilometers receiving the most ecological benefit — the team gathered data from satellite imaging and multi-year coastal surveys to shape habitat conservation plans. Researchers found that winter storms concentrate kelp wrack on beaches, a link that may guide future protection efforts.  Edhat

  • Bishop Diego beat Etiwanda 28-14 on Friday night at La Playa Stadium after overcoming early fumbles to improve their record to 4-0 this season.   • The Santa Barbara High girls’ volleyball team improved to a record of 5 to 2 after sweeping Dos Pueblos with set scores of 25 to 19, 25 to 20, and 25 to 14 on Thursday night.
