  • Elizabeth Poett, a seventh-generation rancher, will host The Ranch Table dinner on October 11 at her historic ranch near Lompoc to launch a Farm-to-Foodbank initiative supporting the Santa Barbara County Foodbank amid federal funding cuts. The fundraiser — featuring hands-on ranch activities, live music, and an auction — aims to cover up to a quarter of a $1 million goal and to buy produce directly from local farmers.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara Public Library is hosting its annual Community Baby Shower on October 4 from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Central Library, Michael Towbes Library Plaza—where new and expecting parents can discover essential resources and connect with local organizations.   • Domestic Violence Solutions (DVS) is adding fencing, surveillance cameras and staff training at its Santa Barbara shelter to boost security for survivors. The safety upgrades, supported by a $100,000 donation from the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara, will help survivors feel safer as they begin to rebuild their lives.  KEYT
  • Today, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians holds its annual Chumash Charity Golf Classic at Alisal Golf Course in Solvang to raise funds for local programs (Angels Foster Care, CALM, Mental Wellness Center). The three-day event will run through September 25th and has raised over $2 million since 2005 to support children and families.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The 24th Annual Santa Barbara Rescue Mission Bayou Down Under benefit will take place on October 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grand Lawn at Sandpiper Golf Club, where Janet Rowse, co-founder of SafeLaunch, will be honored with the Leni Fe Bland Award for her work in youth addiction prevention—guests will also enjoy a silent auction, Aussie snacks at the Outback Shack, dinner on the green, and shuttles available for transportation.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The Rotary Club of Carpinteria and Girls Inc. will unveil a Peace Pole at Girls Inc. on Thursday, September 25, at 4:30 p.m.—it will show the message May Peace Prevail on Earth in nine languages and mark their joint effort to bring unity to the community.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Residents at Covenant Living at the Samarkand in Santa Barbara have spent time knitting and crocheting items for people in need+ the group donates two dozen infant caps and blankets to Cottage Hospital. CULTURE NEWS

  • Golden Globe Award-winning singer Amanda McBroom will perform a holiday benefit concert called Wintersong at the Marjorie Luke Theatre (721 E. Cota St.) on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 3 p.m.; the event will raise funds for the Center for Successful Aging with ticket prices at $28.50 for general admission and $45 for VIP seating.  Noozhawk
  • University of South Dakota professor Kristina Lee gave a talk at the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara and the Live Oak Unitarian Society about the history of atheist organizing—she explained how lessons from early atheist groups help build community and challenge bias.  Edhat

  • Allan Hancock College is hosting 30 free Cash for College workshops at high schools in northern Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County from Oct. 1 to Feb. 26 to help high school seniors, current students and their families complete financial aid applications.   • The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum will host the Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series event 'Life Beneath the Waves: Uncovering the Science Behind the Santa Barbara Channel’s Kelp Forest Sanctuaries' on October 16 at 7:00 p.m.—researchers from UCSB's Caselle Lab will explain how their work helps protect local kelp forests.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Driving Awareness is hosting an interactive installation called Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers for Suicide Prevention Month.
