  • On September 22, Mystic Ocean Adventures named Palmer G. Jackson, Jr. as a new board trustee. He is a fourth-generation Santa Barbara native — known for his nonprofit leadership and commitment to advancing STEAM learning and environmental stewardship.  Santa Barbara Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Barbara’s fall arts season will be vibrant as Sir Paul McCartney is set to perform at the Santa Barbara Bowl and the Museum of Art will host landmark exhibitions featuring works by Monet, van Gogh, Matisse, Gauguin, and Mondrian — upcoming issues will detail more events from UCSB Arts & Lectures, classical music, dance, and interviews with Grammy-winning artists Samara Joy and Aoife O’Donovan.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • State Street Ballet and Santa Barbara Symphony will open the fall season with Romeo and Juliet at the Granada on October 18-19—plus a full lineup featuring Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker at the Granada and Recess! at Lobero—providing diverse dance styles for local audiences.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • I’m With Her, a folk trio — comprised of Aoife O’Donovan, Sarah Jarosz, and Sara Watkins — will perform at UCSB Arts and Lectures in Santa Barbara on October 3 to share stories about their new album Wild and Clear and Blue.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara classical music groups will kick off a fall season with the Los Angeles Philharmonic performing on October 3—this will mark Gustavo Dudamel’s last appearance before his move to New York. Other events from CAMA, MAW, and the Santa Barbara Symphony—celebrating conductor Nir Kabaretti’s 20th season—will offer a full slate of concerts at local venues.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara Bowl CEO Rick Boller said tickets bought on sites like StubHub will not be honored for Friday’s Paul McCartney show because they were only offered through an official registration system that limited each buyer to two—ensuring that real fans receive them. Reseller sites still list tickets for over $10,000, putting buyers at risk of a costly loss.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara's Art and Culture office announced winners of the Business in Art award — the Grace Fisher Foundation and the Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative — for their support of local art. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Westmont’s engineering program earned full ABET accreditation after a three-year review—with the recognition retroactive to October 2022—and evaluators noted no deficiencies in its standards. The school will hold a public celebration during Homecoming on Oct. 17, from 4-5 p.m. at the Fletcher Jones Foundation Center for Engineering—a move that local industry leaders say may open up new job opportunities.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Starting today, the UCSB Library will end Late Night Study at 1 a.m. and will be closed from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m.—regular hours run from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and extended access returns during Dead Week and Finals week.  KEYT
  • With school starting this week at UC Santa Barbara, an estimated 14,000 bike riders must register their bicycles online for a $10 fee as required by law. The University Police enforce parking and riding rules and will impound bikes parked illegally with a $24 release fee — riders should follow campus regulations closely.  KEYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Falcon 9 rocket will launch from Space Launch Complex-4 at Vandenberg Space Force Base from 6:57 p.m. to 10:57 p.m. to deliver 24 Starlink satellites into orbit and land its booster on a droneship in the Pacific. Backup opportunities for the launch are scheduled for Friday — if needed.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara is launching a major downtown makeover today with the official kickoff of the Downtown Improvement Association. Crews are pressure-washing sidewalks—refreshing landscaping on State Street and starting a storefront beautification program with pilot outdoor dining—to boost foot traffic and support local businesses.  KEYT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County Public Health is preparing to reassign 7,500 undocumented patients from its five clinics within 100 days to prevent loss of federal funding under new HHS rules—County Public Health Director Mouhanad Hammami said the move may cost $8.2 million a year and lead to 40 layoffs while local providers are coordinating care transitions.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Cottage Health opened its new Cottage Rheumatology Clinic at 2320 Bath St. Suite 315 in Santa Barbara on September 23, expanding access to evaluation and treatment for patients with autoimmune and inflammatory conditions + the clinic is led by Dr. Courtney Stull, a board-certified rheumatologist with extensive training.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • San Marcos High flag football team won 14-0 against Oxnard at Warkentin Stadium on Tuesday night. The team set a program record with its fourth consecutive shutout, improved its record to 16-3 and will travel to Buena for another contest on Thursday.  Santa Barbara Independent
