  • Veggie Rescue said executive director Judy Taggart left and interim director Eryn Shugart was named as the group marked its 15th year. The nonprofit held a Gathering for Good event on May 1 at Folded Hills Winery in Gaviota—showing its fight against food waste and hunger.  Noozhawk

  • New owners Jeffrey Wilkins and 9 Muses Management LLC plan to transform the long-closed Casa Blanca restaurant at 330 State St. into a spot with a music venue, restaurant, piano lounge and park—replacing 18 parking spaces with greenery. The Historic Landmarks Commission has given initial support for the project as it seeks to boost downtown activity.  Noozhawk
  • Anna Janelle Jewelry, a woman-owned business, moved to a new space at 1103-A State Street — the former Bella Rosa Galleries — after its grand opening on September 20 that offered exclusive tote bags to the first 20 customers. Founder Anna Janelle, who began designing jewelry in 2012 and refined her craft in Amsterdam, blended Dutch design with a local coastal style in her handcrafted pieces.  Edhat

  • At the Goleta Community Center on September 25, winners of the 2025 Creek Week Art Contest were announced after more than 40 artists submitted work inspired by the theme Once Upon a Creek—Bringing the Community Together with Art.   • Dom’s Taverna opened on East Victoria Street in Santa Barbara two months ago in the former Pascual’s and Trattoria Vittoria building, where it now offers authentic Basque cuisine that blends tradition with creative flavors—making it a new community gathering spot.   • UCSB associate professor Grace Han was named a Moore Inventor Fellow for her work on solar fuels that capture sunlight and store it as heat+ her research is expected to help create clean, off-grid heating solutions for homes and businesses.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Last Saturday, Santa Barbara County volunteers joined the 41st Annual Coastal Cleanup Day to collect over 3,600 pounds of trash from local beaches, creeks and parks in three hours—organized by Explore Ecology and the county Resource Recovery and Waste Management Division.  Noozhawk
  • Volunteers in Santa Barbara cleaned up more than 3,600 pounds of trash from local beaches, creeks, and parks last Saturday during Coastal Cleanup Day—organized by Explore Ecology and the County Resource Recovery and Waste Management Division—and they uncovered unusual items such as a curling iron, 53 pounds of golf balls, and a pink butterfly stiletto along 61 miles of coastline.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • First 5 Santa Barbara County started the Aligned Leadership for Results Program—an effort that brings together 35 leaders from 22 agencies to help children from before birth to age five. The 13‑month program has 14 sessions and uses data and community input to drive change until September 2026.  Edhat
  • The City of Santa Barbara announced that Allison DeBusk is appointed as the new Community Development Director effective September 30—she brings over 20 years of planning experience and has managed the Planning Division. She will lead the department to support thoughtful growth and efficient service for the community.  Edhat
  • Santa Barbara collected $4.0M in transient occupancy taxes for August 2025, the second month of its fiscal year, and has gathered $8.2M so far, which is 2.0% above budget — $7.2M came from hotels and $1.0M from short-term rentals.  Edhat

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara County Health Department warned residents that unpermitted roadside and pop-up food vendors may put the public at risk due to poor food safety practices—such as pest infestations and lack of proper hygiene facilities.   • A newly built Starbucks cafe-only prototype at 402 North Milpas Street sold for $3.7 million—Hanley Investment Group arranged the deal for the Los Angeles-based developer and a San Francisco investor bought the property.   • Professional beach volleyball returns to East Beach with the Santa Barbara Open set for Saturday, Oct. 4 and Sunday, Oct. 5.
