COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Santa Barbara County Animal Care Foundation held its Tails of Hope fundraiser at Elings Park and raised more than $200,000 to support county animal services programs. Over 330 guests, including celebrity emcees John Corbett and Bo Derek — along with local officials, showed their support for helping animals in need.  Noozhawk
  • The fourth annual Plane Pull will be held on October 25 at Santa Barbara Airport where teams of 10 will race to pull a 100,000-pound Star Wars-themed 737—raising funds for Alpha Resource Center that supports individuals with developmental disabilities. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Atlantic Aviation on Cook Place.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The Santa Barbara Mission has started work on a $1.1 million ADA ramp that will improve access to the historic church as crews remove tile and cut steps for new construction.   • On September 27, singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey unexpectedly joined local band The Fastest Kids in School for a quick cover of 'West Coast' at Institution Ale on State Street — a moment the band described as unforgettable.  Edhat
  • Jane Goodall’s work with chimpanzees and her Roots and Shoots — established in 1991 — has left a lasting impact on Santa Barbara Zoo practices, including naming animals with individual names. EDUCATION NEWS

  • This summer, AS Internal Vice President Enri Lala reshaped the Senate by creating a project tracker and negotiating a bike path between the library and the Interactive Learning Pavilion—he also pushed for clearer student fee management and better housing security. Lala will finalize funding and timelines for these projects by the end of the school term—steps that aim to boost efficiency and transparency on campus.  Daily Nexus
  • Leiya Kadah, the new A.S. External Vice President for Statewide Affairs, spent her summer learning her role, hiring her team, and planning campaigns for racial justice, basic needs, environmental defense, and voter registration.   • This summer, Associated Students President Le Anh Metzger improved the association’s internal systems and streamlined communication among A.S. groups while preparing to bring NARCAN nasal spray to residence halls.   • During the summer, E.J. Raad, Associated Students’ 2025—26 External Vice President of Local Affairs, hired a ten-person team and planned projects to ease student housing challenges and expand health services in Isla Vista. He will launch the Rate My Landlord website in winter quarter and host STI screen-a-thons while preparing for Deltopia and meeting UCSB’s new chancellor later this month—underscoring his aim to improve campus living conditions.  Daily Nexus

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies released its mid-season report yesterday, noting 44 companies enrolled and many vessels slowing to 10 knots to lower the risk of whale strikes—vessels traveled over 247,000 nautical miles in an expanded zone that now covers the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary. The report shows that lower speeds also reduced harmful emissions affecting nearby coastal communities.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Life Rolls On, a national nonprofit that supports adaptive sports, will host its annual They Will Surf Again event tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Rincon Beach Park in Carpinteria—hundreds of volunteers, athletes, and families will attend to support adaptive surfing.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara County Health Department warns residents to avoid unpermitted roadside and pop-up food vendors due to unsafe food handling and links to foodborne illnesses, including salmonella.   • Jason Libs turned a short gig into a lasting residency at The Red Piano and SOhO Restaurant and Music Club—he grew up singing in Indiana and now offers his blend of rock, folk, and country to Santa Barbara.
