  • The 39th Avocado Festival in Carpinteria celebrates the local fruit with food vendors, live music on three stages, and free ferris wheel rides for kids 5 and under, with a 10 a.m. guacamole contest scheduled for today—proceeds benefit the Carpinteria Education Foundation and Future Farmers of America.  KEYT
  • Friendship Center will host the Halloween Disco Fundraiser event at Community Arts Workshop, 631 Garden St., Santa Barbara, from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24—tickets will raise funds for Adult Day Service programs for older adults with dementia while guests enjoy a hosted open bar, barbecue dinner, dessert by McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams, live DJ, and other entertainment.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rice Elementary’s new playground opens today with a bumpy slide, fresh green spaces and an upper-grade area featuring 16 swings — replacing the 1997 equipment and continuing Santa Maria-Bonita School District's outdoor improvement efforts funded by a one-time block grant. The project broke ground in June and joins upgrades already completed at four other district playgrounds.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildlife ecologist Rae Wynn-Grant will share her memoir ‘Wild Life: Finding My Purpose in an Untamed World’ and discuss how people change nature at an event hosted by the Community Environmental Council and Central Coast Riviera Roses. The event will take place Friday—Oct. 10 from 6—9 p.m. at CEC’s Environmental Hub at 1219 State St. with tickets priced at $43.45 and a meet-and-greet and book signing to follow.  Noozhawk

  • Today, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department begins Fire Prevention Week with a focus on using rechargeable batteries and electronic devices safely at home. The department advises residents to buy from trusted sources, charge devices on hard surfaces, and test smoke alarms—steps designed to reduce fire risk.  Edhat

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at UCSB are developing a synthetic membrane gel for breast cancer research that improves on traditional mouse tumor products—this gel will let scientists test how cell stiffness affects tumor growth.  Edhat
  • Santa Barbara County health officials are urging residents to get their flu and COVID-19 shots as respiratory virus season ramps up after last season saw 28 flu deaths, 14 COVID-19 deaths, and 7 RSV deaths. Vaccinations are now available through pharmacies, primary care, and urgent care—officials stress that everyone aged six months and older should get vaccinated for extra protection.  Noozhawk

  • UCSB men’s soccer won a 3-0 victory over UC Riverside on Saturday night—Buba Fofanah, Zac Siebenlist, and Kaden Standish scored as the team maintained strong early control. Head coach Tim Vom Steeg said the win builds on their unbeaten start in Big West play as they prepare to play UC Davis on Oct. 8 and the Roadrunners on Oct. 11.  Noozhawk
  • At the Saturday Channel League Cross Country Prelims in Ojai, the San Marcos girls earned first place with all five of their scoring runners finishing in the top ten and Dos Pueblos secured second place in a competitive girls race — the event sets up the Channel League Finals on Nov. 5 at Dos Pueblos as teams prepare for the season's second half.  Noozhawk
  • Karisma Lewis, a top four star basketball recruit from Oak Park High School (ranked among the best shooting guards in the country), committed on Friday to play for UCSB women's basketball next season. Her decision came as she leaned on strong family ties to the Gauchos and chose the school over offers from power programs.  Noozhawk
  • Sixty volleyball teams began the AVP Next-Santa Barbara Open on Friday at East Beach sand courts and will compete through today — Tournament Director Jordon Dryer will oversee championship games as teams vie for cash prizes and Rad Power electric bikes while fans like Cara Spieler watched the event with family members also participating.  KEYT
  • On Friday night, No. 6 Santa Barbara City College beat No. 13 Moorpark College 3 to 1 at Robertson Gymnasium with set scores of 25 to 17, 25 to 27, 25 to 22 and 25 to 14. The Vaqueros improved to a 13 to 1 record and remain undefeated in conference play—head coach Kat Niksto said key players helped the team bounce back.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara High boys water polo team won two games at the Buena Tournament in Ventura with scores of 13—5 over Buena Park and 13—9 over Villanova Prep. The Dons will face Rio Mesa on Thursday.  Noozhawk
