  • C.A.R.E.4Paws is fundraising for the region’s first confidential Pet Refuge during Domestic Violence Awareness Month to help pet families in crisis. The new refuge will have indoor/outdoor kennels for dogs and a separate area for cats to provide veterinary care and safe boarding—supporting survivors who must leave abusive homes without abandoning their pets.  Edhat

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Deputies and firefighters are searching trails off the Franklin Trail—north of Carpinteria—for a missing hiker. Three ground crews, drones, a sheriff’s search and rescue team and a helicopter are assisting as efforts continue.  KEYT

  • Edhat is launching its annual Halloween Story Writing Contest today where participants must submit one PG-rated story using the provided beginning and key words like Cauldron, Twix, and Gauchos—entries are due by Midnight on October 26 and the winner will be announced on October 30 with a gift card to a local business.  Edhat
  • Rock-N-Roll 805 has been officially recognized as a nonprofit to help young Santa Barbara musicians gain live stage experience. Its official 501c3 approval arrived in early September — the program now offers a free website for eager performers to sign up and learn production skills.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Pete Muller, a Santa Barbara singer-songwriter, businessman and philanthropist, will perform with Stephen Kellogg at SoHo Restaurant & Music Club. His fourth album One Last Dance will be released on November 14 with artwork by a local artist.  KEYT
  • Certain Sparks Music is a music store — recording studio, learning center and performance space in the historic Rudolph building on South H in Old Town Lompoc.   • NatureTrack Foundation will mark its 15-year milestone with the NatureTrack 15th Anniversary Celebration & Opening Night Film Festival on October 9 at the Riviera Theatre in Santa Barbara and October 10 at Camino Real Cinemas in Goleta—featuring a premiere film screening, live Q&A, and the presentation of the Outdoor Icon Award.   • Three film festivals will bring many films to Santa Barbara this fall as NatureTrack Film Festival runs October 9-10 with outdoor adventure films and student screenings, Ceylon International Film Festival features South Asian cinema October 13-17 at Direct Relief Hatch Hall, and Wild and Free Film Festival kicks off with an outdoor screening on October 18 before its main event runs November 14-16 at Camino Real Cinemas in Goleta.   • Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats performed at the Santa Barbara Bowl on October 2 and celebrated ten years since their debut album with high energy—bringing onstage guest Gregory Alan Isakov to join in soulful hits that moved the crowd.   • U.S. Rep. Carbajal reintroduced the Degrees Not Debt Act today to double the maximum Pell Grant to $14,800 and index it to inflation by the 2028-2029 school year—an effort that will help lower student loan debt for California students.  Edhat

  • October is National Pedestrian Safety Month and drivers are urged to slow down to protect pedestrians—reports show a person is killed every 72 minutes during traffic crashes. The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office advises drivers to follow speed limits near schools, neighborhoods, and in hard-to-see conditions.  Noozhawk
  • The County of Santa Barbara is inviting residents to share views on adult justice diversion programs—initiatives that offer alternatives to jail through accountability, treatment and support. Sessions will be held in Santa Barbara on October 21 at 4:00 p.m. at the Eastside Library, in Lompoc on October 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, in Santa Maria on October 22 at 3:00 p.m. at the Central Library and online on October 27 at 11:00 a.m.  Santa Barbara Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Chumash Casino Resort is running its annual Project Pink campaign this October to sell pink sweets and drinks that raise funds for breast cancer research plus matching donations will support the Breast Imaging Center at Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital. Tribal chairman Kenneth Kahn said the event helps with early detection, ensuring the community receives much-needed support.  Noozhawk

  • No. 6 Santa Barbara City College’s women’s volleyball team defeated No. 13 Moorpark College 3—1 on Friday night at Robertson Gymnasium and boosted their record to 13—1 overall and 3—0 in conference play.  Noozhawk
  • At 4:50 a.m. Saturday, 17-year-old Ray McPhee clipped into his bike at the base of Old San Marcos Road and began a nearly 48-hour ride that saw him complete 48 laps for a total gain of 58,000 feet—doubling the climb needed to match Mount Everest's vertical height; local cyclists joined him as his ride also raised funds for the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Club.  Noozhawk
