- ➤ The Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at SBCC is launching a three-part series called AI Unlocked to boost AI literacy for local business owners, students and educators—partners include the SBCC Career Center, Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce and the EDC SBDC. The first event, AI Unlocked: Powering Productivity, will be held Friday, Oct. 10 at Fe Bland Forum with free admission and parking—organizers have also introduced a county-wide AI survey to guide future support for businesses. - ➤ Two UCSB professors, Michel Devoret and John Martinis, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics on Oct.7 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for their work on a superconducting circuit that advanced everyday technology—UCSB Chancellor Dennis Assanis said he was very proud of their breakthrough that began in the 1980s. - ➤ All registered voters in California will receive a Vote-by-Mail packet with a ballot, instructions and a return envelope at the beginning of October for the Nov. 4 special election — the envelope must be signed for the ballot to count. - ➤ Texas oil company Sable Offshore is seeking over $347M in damages from the California Coastal Commission for allegedly delaying the restart of the Las Flores Pipeline System that once caused the Refugio Oil Spill in 2015. On September 29, the company filed a declaratory judgment action against the state and may use an alternative offshore storage strategy—if it overcomes regulatory hurdles in Santa Barbara County. - ➤ City officials and Alliance Bernstein will show the latest design of the Paseo Nuevo redevelopment at public meetings starting October 9—this plan has 313 housing units including 80 affordable ones to keep the Canary Hotel roof deck views clear.
