COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office will host Coffee with Cop on Oct. 16 at Kozy Coffee at 6560 Pardall Road in Isla Vista from 9—11 a.m. The event will let residents meet deputies and share their concerns while free drip coffee is served.  Noozhawk
  • Goodland Tattoo Shop in Santa Barbara is hosting its first Cultura Flash Day on Saturday at noon to raise funds for 805UndocuFund in response to summer immigration detentions. The event features a flash sale of Aztec and Mayan-inspired tattoos for arms and legs—most proceeds will benefit the immigrant advocacy group.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue volunteers work with decades-old equipment to respond to emergencies— from lost hikers to car crashes along mountain roads. They say better tools and community support are needed to keep saving lives on California’s tough terrain.  KEYT

  • UCSB Arts & Lectures is hosting an evening with journalist Alexis Okeowo at Campbell Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. She will discuss her new book and explore how race, faith, politics and power intersect for insights into systemic issues.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nhan T. Huynh and her former adviser Michael Ludkovski from UCSB won the Peter Clark Prize from the IFoA for their paper on a new mortality model using Gaussian processes — the work shows death trends across groups — and it may change how risk is managed.  Edhat
  • The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara received its 13th consecutive four-star rating from Charity Navigator—its highest rating—demonstrating strong financial efficiency and accountability, and it also earned its seventh consecutive Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid to support its community educational mission.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara Unified School District today launched its new Safety and Reporting Hub which gives students, families, and staff access to safety plans, reporting tools, and employee resources. The online hub will improve how everyone reports issues and gets help—enhancing school safety across the district.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists led by UCSB’s David Valentine found eerie barrels on the ocean floor off the Los Angeles coast that show white halos—an effect of caustic alkaline waste leaching into the sand. The team will continue mapping and testing sediments to learn more about the long-lasting impact on the deep sea.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The Santa Barbara County Fire Department received a $990,000 grant from CAL FIRE’s Wildfire Prevention Grants Program to lead a project that will treat more than 3,100 acres in high-risk areas — including a 1,819-acre prescribed fire at Sedgwick Preserve this fall to reduce hazardous fuels and protect residents and property. The grant supports efforts to clear fuels and help prevent large wildfires in the Santa Ynez Valley and nearby communities.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Santa Barbara City Planning Commission reviewed a plan that could turn part of Paseo Nuevo into new housing and retail space with 233 market-rate units — 80 affordable units. The project, led by The Georgetown Co. and AB Commercial, will allow potential height increases to up to 75 feet and include open houses at 707 Paseo Nuevo on Oct.15 and Oct.16 for public comment.  KEYT
  • The Goleta City Council approved a new policy that will issue citations to people living in their vehicles or encampments if they refuse offered shelter and services. The rule, which starts with a $100 fine and will be enforced by complaints—rather than routine patrols—is a response to a 95% rise in local complaints.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District is offering $2,200 for eligible vehicles from 2002 or older as part of its buyback program to cut pollution. Drivers must have a valid smog certificate and be registered for at least two years — dismantlers in Goleta, Lompoc, and Santa Maria will permanently dispose of these vehicles.  Santa Barbara Independent

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara County Planning Commission approved a 99-unit, fully affordable apartment complex at 1331 Foster Road in Orcutt on October 8— the project includes 150 parking spaces and public amenities like a children's play area, outdoor fitness area, community gardens and a dog park.  Edhat

SPORTS NEWS

  • Laguna Blanca girls volleyball swept Dunn on Thursday for a share of the Frontier League title on Senior Night while Bishop Diego and Santa Barbara High also won games to share their league titles. Oxnard and Dos Pueblos had competitive matches and will prepare for upcoming postseason contests—strong plays from seniors helped each team.  Noozhawk
  • The San Marcos Royals flag football team beat Ventura High 41-25 on Thursday in Ventura. They overcame a 19-14 halftime deficit by outscoring the Cougars 27-6 in the second half to secure the win.  Noozhawk
