- ➤ Santa Barbara Symphony and State Street Ballet will open their dual season with 'Romeo and Juliet' on October 18 and 19 at the Granada Theatre. - ➤ Santa Barbara Unified’s reading and math scores nearly reached their 2018-2019 highs (before the pandemic) with 51.7% meeting English standards and 41.4% meeting math standards. - ➤ Andrew Jose Garcia Vasquez earned the first Joe Howell Legacy Scholarship on Thursday at the Santa Barbara County Board of Education meeting in Santa Maria—marking his success in earning his high school diploma through a juvenile justice program—and he received a framed certificate, a $500 check and a bouquet; he said he wants to become a plumber to help his family. - ➤ The Santa Barbara County Fire Department has received a $990,000 grant from CAL FIRE to lead the Vegetation Management Program and Ignition Prevention Project. - ➤ Santa Barbara Congressmember Salud Carbajal reintroduced the Degrees Not Debt Act at Allan Hancock College on October 2 — the bill would double the maximum Pell Grant to $14,800 and index it to inflation by 2028-2029 to help students with exceptional financial need manage rising college costs. - ➤ The city of Santa Barbara, in partnership with the Fund for Santa Barbara, allocated $333,000 through its Immigrant Relief Fund to six nonprofits serving immigrant families—providing legal defense, housing, and emergency care.
