COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Latino Giving Circle awarded $32,000 to Immigrant Legal Defense Center and 805undocufund during its annual Grants Night to support immigrant rights and legal services— a decision made by local leaders who started the group in 2019 and have donated more than $100,000 in total to Latino-serving nonprofits. This Regular event shows local commitment and immediately directs funds to areas of need.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara High School alums gathered for the annual All Don’s Reunion to mark the school’s 150th anniversary—bringing together former students and community members. The celebration featured a special ceremony honoring longtime alumni such as 106-year-old Jane Wickman, along with a car show, music, food, and an auction.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chaucer's Bookstore will host an author talk at 3 p.m. on Oct. 19 at 3321 State St. where bestselling local writer Patrice Karst will discuss her latest book The Invisible String Family Celebration: A Reimagining of The Invisible String, which offers a diverse retelling to help families feel connected.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB’s museum is showing a big painting by Joan Mitchell on her 100th birthday — the work called Sunflower fills almost an entire wall. The exhibit also includes a short film that tells her story and shows her role in abstract art — a rare honor for a woman in a movement mostly led by men.  Edhat
  • UCSB Arts & Lectures will host award-winning banjoist Noam Pikelny and Friends at Campbell Hall on Saturday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m.—tickets cost $44 to $59 for the public and $15 for UCSB students. Pikelny, known for his work with Punch Brothers and Mighty Poplar, will mix classic tunes with fresh acoustic sounds at the event.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials announced this week that a 36-acre section of More Mesa has been permanently protected from future development with a new conservation easement. The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County will serve as steward with local partners — updating the management plan for habitat restoration and trail upkeep.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB researchers have studied farming totoaba to see if it can cut poaching in the Gulf of California by offering a legal way to get the fish’s swimbladder—this may lower prices and trim the illegal profits of cartels. Their study shows that legal aquaculture might help protect endangered species if strict rules and subsidies keep farming competitive.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County is reminding residents to keep road shoulders clear — a step that ensures safe space for walking, biking, and emergency vehicles. The County is offering free yard signs to support these efforts.  Edhat

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Parkinson’s Association of Santa Barbara runs an online caregiver support group that meets via Zoom on Thursdays at 2:30 p.m.—this group helps local families deal with the challenges of Parkinson’s care. The group is open to new members seeking support and connection as they manage caregiving responsibilities.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara County’s Department of Behavioral Wellness recognized October 10 as World Mental Health Day with the theme Access to Service: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies. The department has led its Community Wellness Team since the 2018 debris flow—providing Psychological First Aid and culturally sensitive care during and after crises.  Edhat

SPORTS NEWS

  • Westmont Women’s Soccer earned a 3-2 win over Fresno Pacific when they scored two second-half goals—marking their second win this week. The Warriors will play Azusa Pacific on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.  Noozhawk
  • Dos Pueblos and Carpinteria High cross country teams competed on Saturday in Goleta—Dos Pueblos Charger girls won the title while the boys placed second—and both schools will race next week, with Dos Pueblos set for the Rough Rider Invitational in Clovis next Friday and Carpinteria High heading to the Mt. SAC Invitational on Oct. 24.  Noozhawk
  • On Saturday afternoon, Westmont Women’s Volleyball lost a sweep over three sets to the Sea Lions ranked fifth — who out-killed them 53 to 24 — with Jill Leslie’s 10th kill proving decisive. The Warriors will host the Vanguard Lions on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a match that does not count toward their PacWest record.  Noozhawk
  • The No. 12 UCSB Men's Water Polo team beat the No. 6 UC San Diego team 11-10 in a tough Big West game that ended with an upset win. Players Brock Zamanian and Danilo Dragovic each scored four points, and the team will play No. 19 UC Irvine on Oct. 18 at 12 noon (Dos Pueblos High School).  Noozhawk
