- ➤ Residents in Goleta oppose a proposed 166,740-square-foot self-storage facility at 7780 Hollister Ave—neighbors worry it will remove 132 trees and change the look of their neighborhood. The Goleta Design Review Board will hold a review hearing on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at City Hall where residents may offer comments. Noozhawk

- ➤ Today the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation’s Outreach program—together with Children’s Creative Project—will welcome 2,200 students for Kids At The Bowl at the Santa Barbara Bowl; they will watch Las Cafeteras perform a lively Día de los Muertos show and then join a workshop on The Art of Remembering. The event gives students a chance to learn about Indigenous heritage and celebrate community culture. Edhat
- ➤ A retrospective exhibit by printmaker Maurizio Barattucci will open Nov. 6 at the Community Arts Workshop (CAW) in Santa Barbara and run until Nov. 15. The free show features works including 'Moonscape' and offers pieces for purchase (a portion of sales benefits the CAW). Noozhawk
- ➤ Adults will enjoy a Halloween happy hour at MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration — Innovation on Oct. 24 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. as part of National Chemistry Week, where guests can make dry ice crystal balls, color changing potions, and watch live chemistry demos by guest chemists across all museum floors and the rooftop Sky Garden. - ➤ Stefanie Hassett and the Ian M. Hassett Foundation will be honored with the 2025 Leadership in Arts Award at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Oct. 14 at 9 a.m. at the Joseph Centeno Betteravia Government Administration Building—part of the resolution naming October as Arts and Humanities Month. - ➤ Providence high school students are working at the Boys & Girls Club to tutor younger children in reading, writing & math. Many students commit to at least one session a month under the guidance of teacher Brittany Newman to help improve elementary learning. Noozhawk
- ➤ Gov. Newsom signed a bill to build a database that stops teachers with credible abuse accusations from moving between schools—this law will start on January 1 and requires staff training and policy changes in all K-12 schools. It aims to protect children by ensuring schools screen potential employees before hiring. Santa Barbara Independent
- ➤ Head Start transformed its Westside playground into an outdoor classroom where kids run on turf, slide down a hill and play with water tables — the upgrade supports learning in science, math and art. K-Lite 101.7 held a radiothon that raised over $10,000 to fund the new space at 629 Coronel Place for children ages 0 to 5. Noozhawk
- ➤ Cal Poly Army ROTC cadets went to Advanced Camp this summer at Fort Knox in Kentucky — where they earned the highest score among 32 Western programs and more than 265 units nationwide — and received awards including Gigi Travagline’s Top Female Army Fitness Award. After plans to close the program were reversed following community feedback — it now serves as an extension of the Cal Poly Military Science Department at UCSB — the program set a high standard for military training. - ➤ Providence girls volleyball clinched the Condor League title with a four-set win over Oak Grove at Ortega Gym on Saturday—completing an undefeated season while honoring Senior Night. The team will compete in the CIF-SS playoffs next week—building momentum for the postseason. Noozhawk
- ➤ Santa Barbara Soccer Club U13 Girls Academy Aspire captured a championship trophy in Utah after defeating Sand and Surf 3—1 in the West Regional Super Group and automatically qualified for nationals in June. - ➤ UCSB men’s soccer tied 1-1 after Cal State Bakersfield scored a late goal—Buba Fofanah gave UCSB an early lead while freshman Owen Beninga made key saves before Bakersfield equalized. - ➤ Karisma Lewis, one of the top high school basketball recruits, turned down over $100000 in offers and committed to UCSB last week to pursue her goal of playing in the WNBA—following in the footsteps of coach April McDivitt Schilling.
