COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Del Pueblo Café in Goleta raised over $25,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to cover its financial struggles, owners Giselle Cuevas & Victor Camargo said in an update on Monday. The funds will allow the family-run restaurant to remain open for the next three years despite rising costs.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • C.A.R.E.4Paws is fundraising to open a pet refuge that will temporarily board animals from domestic violence situations so survivors can seek safety— the facility will have indoor/outdoor kennels for dogs and home-like rooms for cats with available vet care, grooming and training, and it plans to open by the end of the year or early next year.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • At Rancho Carmina on Sunday, the Santa Ynez Valley Foundation celebrated seven local volunteers at its 30th annual Champions of the Valley event and honored Lifetime Achievement Award winner Becky Barieau, who directed her $1,000 donation (to People Helping People).   • Today, The Pad Climbing gym opened its doors inside Magnolia Shopping Center after nearly a decade of searching for a space and two years of construction—offering 14,500 square feet of climbing walls, rope terrain, and community areas.   • Ensemble Theatre Company opens its season with ‘War of the Worlds: The Panic Broadcast’ now playing at New Vic Theatre in Santa Barbara—reviving Orson Welles’ 1938 radio drama with a blend of comic and dramatic elements while featuring performances by Richard Baird, Ashley Margaret Morton, Matthew Floyd Miller and Bryan Daniel Porter.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara Revels will hold its Harbor Sing on Sunday, October 26th at 4:00 p.m. at the Deep Sea Tasting Room on Stearns Wharf, where traditional tunes, folk songs, sea shanties, and Irish favorites will be sung while guests enjoy premium wines and savory snacks with a sunset harbor view—tickets cost $25 and include a songbook, setting the stage for the Winter Solstice show at Lobero Theatre on December 20th–21st.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • UC Santa Barbara received high marks from several national rankings for its research, value, access and academic excellence, showing strong support for veterans, social mobility and affordability. Forbes rated it the No. 12 public university and U.S. News named it among the top national schools plus Chancellor Dennis Assanis said the honors reflect the hard work of its faculty, students and staff.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 1.5-magnitude earthquake struck 10 kilometers south of Santa Barbara on October 12 at 9:56 p.m. and minor tremors continue to be felt around the region.  Edhat
  • Wayne Mellinger writes that local fields now grow strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries year‐round—thanks to careful rotation, irrigation and new varieties—and this change meets high demand normally met only in summer.  Noozhawk
  • Emergency officials in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties warned residents in wildfire burn areas to prepare for heavy rain that could trigger flash flooding and debris flows. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the Gifford and Madre fire areas and residents are urged to leave before dark if they feel unsafe — officials noted the storm remains unpredictable.  KSBY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two local groups have started petitions to decide if State Street should remain car-free or allow one-way traffic—Strong Towns favors a pedestrian-first plan while the Downtown Santa Barbara Improvement Association supports reopening it to vehicles. The issue will be considered at the City Council meeting on October 21.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit on October 3 against Sable Offshore for alleged coastal violations along the Gaviota Coast, saying the company conducted 144 unauthorized digs that hurt local creeks and wetlands. Sable said it is updating its plans to shift operations offshore—amid fines, criminal charges and a countersuit set for October 15—while state officials push for stricter energy oversight.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • The Santa Barbara Soccer Club 13U girls team won the Girls Academy Aspire West Regional championship last week — earning a spot in the Nationals Tournament in June — and showcasing their strong local talent.  Noozhawk
  • At Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon, San Marcos volleyball player Lila Westmacott and flag football player Peyton Sperling were named co-Athletes of the Week while Santa Barbara High football player Aaron Baizan was recognized as the boys’ honoree. Westmacott helped win two league championships, Sperling gained 237 yards and six touchdowns, and Baizan had 96 rushing yards, a touchdown and six tackles in the Dons’ 45-13 win over Rio Mesa—showing key roles in their teams’ performance.  Noozhawk
