COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara — a group dedicated to empowering young women — will host the Bright Girls, Bold Futures fundraiser on Tuesday, October 21st from 6-9 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Club to honor longtime supporter Stina Hans; all funds will go to the Stina Hans Impact Fund to support free programs for girls.  Santa Barbara Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Kellam de Forest speaker series, sponsored by the Pearl Chase Society, will host Architect Robert Ooley at 6 p.m. on November 7 at the Alhecama Theatre. Ooley will share his ideas on Santa Barbara’s historic preservation and sign copies of his new book—a Guide to Santa Barbara Architecture and Points of Interest.  Santa Barbara Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Adelante Charter School in Santa Barbara posted major gains in state tests on October 14 as English scores increased by 13 points and math by over 16 points, far exceeding typical statewide gains. The school earned the 2025 California Distinguished School honor—showing its strong bilingual program for English Learners.  Santa Barbara Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Newsom signed a bill on Saturday to expand the Santa Barbara program that slows tanker speeds for whale safety and cleaner air into a state law—44 companies already joined and financial incentives are offered based on federal funding. The program started in 2014 and will soon cover coastal zones such as San Diego and the North Coast, reducing fatal whale strikes by 50%.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara County will present its oil phase-out plan on October 21 after supervisors voted in May to stop oil drilling, a move aimed at reducing air pollution & protecting public health and the environment.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara’s Architectural Board of Review approved the mixed-use project The Lofts at the Mill on Oct 13 at 401 and 409 East Haley Street, merging two parcels to build a three-story structure with 26 residential units, 5,111 square feet of commercial space and a parking garage for 52 cars and 34 bikes. The board confirmed the project met its Project Design Approval from June 26 and added green roof areas and permeable pavers for flood mitigation—ensuring design compliance.  Edhat
  • The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office won top honors at the Navy League’s 7th Annual Chili Cookoff on October 9 when Undersheriff Craig Bonner and Chief Custody Deputy Vinny Wasilewski’s 'Last Stand Chili' earned First Place and Best Chili Name—an award that nods to their upcoming retirements at the Santa Barbara Carriage Museum.   • The Solvang City Council voted four to one to deny developer Ed St. George's appeal over design changes to his cottages project at 1704 Mission Drive because the buildings did not meet the city's Danish design standards. Council members supported planning officials after over one hour of public comment — they maintained strict guidelines despite the developer’s argument for an authentic Northern European look.  Noozhawk
  • Nelson Trichler, a 44-year veteran of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at a fundraising barbecue Oct. 11 at the Santa Barbara Carriage and Western Museum—recognizing his role in over 3,000 missions and his leadership in upgrading operations—and continues to serve as president of the team.  Noozhawk
  • Two groups in Santa Barbara have started petitions over what to do with State Street. The Downtown Santa Barbara Improvement Association asks the City Council to allow one way vehicle traffic with retractable bollards to help shops while Strong Towns Santa Barbara wants to keep the street car free, and the Council will review plans on October 21.  Edhat

  • A new Italian tailoring boutique 27 Miles has opened in Montecito at 1137 Coast Village Road offering cashmere sweaters, tailored suits and fine Italian jewelry — a nod to classic style. Italian tailors Nicola and Salvatore will provide custom fittings from Oct 16-24 and host a grand opening celebration from Oct 16-18 from 4 to 7 p.m. — inviting locals to explore Italian design.  Noozhawk

  • Last weekend, the Santa Barbara Coasters 11U baseball team won the Pumpkin Smash Tournament with back-to-back walk-off wins that featured a game-winning double in extra innings, finishing with a 4-0 record.   • Dos Pueblos High School will host the Tri-County Wrestling Association Fall Brawl on Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.—a youth tournament for boys and girls ages 6 to 17 that will charge $20 online or $25 at the door for registration and $10 for adult and $5 for youth spectator tickets with proceeds benefiting local wrestling groups.  Noozhawk
