COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Santa Barbara County held its 28th Annual Red Feather Ball on October 10th in downtown Santa Barbara, where record-breaking funds were raised to support programs for children and families. The event, themed Sunset on the Sahara, was sponsored by U.S. Bank and more than 20 other partners (including local community leaders) and will help expand key programs.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Tri-County Produce will host its first annual Harvest Block Party on Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 105 S. Milpas St to honor new ownership and over 40 years of service — the event will offer live music, wine tastings, free samples, face-painting and pumpkin decorating.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • On Saturday, October 25th, MADD California will host its annual fundraiser—Move With MADD—at Chase Palm Field Park on E Cabrillo Blvd in Santa Barbara to raise awareness of rising impaired driving fatalities and support free victim services. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m., followed by an opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. and a walk at 10:00 a.m.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Dr. Maryam D. Far was appointed as the new Executive Director of the Santa Ynez Valley Children’s Museum yesterday, bringing over 25 years of nonprofit management experience (including work with local agencies) to lead the organization as it prepares for a 2026 grand opening. CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, SOhO Restaurant & Music Club in Santa Barbara hosts a series of concerts spanning many music genres and continues this lineup through November 23. The schedule includes tribute bands, local jazz and reggae acts, and themed events (like the TS12 celebration and the Heads All Happy Halloween Ball) to offer diverse musical experiences.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The Blind Boys of Alabama, a veteran gospel group known for Grammy-winning albums, will perform in Santa Barbara on October 25 at UCSB’s Campbell Hall — they will join gospel and blues artist Cory Henry as part of the UCSB Arts & Lectures season.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara Public Library’s annual S.B. Reads program selected the graphic novel The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen to explore themes of identity, belonging, and immigration—this choice has sparked local interest in its blend of text and art.   • Westmont College is featuring Lines of Inquiry at its Ridley-Tree Museum of Art, showcasing diverse works by art educators including photography, murals, and mixed media. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wendy Fehr, a kindergarten teacher at Riviera Ridge School who joined in 2018 after her family faced fires and debris flows (a crisis that led her to seek a nurturing academic community), now serves as both teacher and Literacy Coach by using the Orton Gillingham method (an evidence-based approach) to help young students learn to read.  Noozhawk
  • Todd Collins, a literacy expert and Palo Alto school board member, will speak today at 2 p.m. at the Central Library on early childhood literacy to explain how science-based reading instruction boosted reading performance in some districts and to discuss how Santa Barbara can improve outcomes–the talk launches a new speaker series by the Santa Barbara Reading Coalition.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • LoDo Studios will unveil the 15-by-50 ft mural ‘Hope Grows Wild’ by Santa Barbara artist Orielle Anaïs on Oct 25 at 216 E Gutierrez St.—the artwork honors California wildflowers and pollinators while urging environmental care.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, October 20, the Ocean Provider—a 270-foot barge—will anchor just east of Stearns Wharf to support the Offshore Desal Pump Platform Stabilization Project, a key upgrade to protect the intake pump structures at the Charles E. Meyer Desalination Plant. Crews will place protective rock around the platforms and work daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through late November to guard the facility.  Edhat
  • The Downtown Santa Barbara Improvement Association is pushing to reopen State Street to one northbound lane using pedestrian data while the city terminated its contract with MIG Inc.—the City Council will meet next Tuesday to hire a new consultant and add funds to finish the master plan expected early 2026.  Noozhawk
