  • Last month, United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County said its 10th Anniversary Rally4Kids event raised over $475,000— the highest amount in its history— to support youth programs like STEM, literacy, career readiness, and meal services as the organization prepares for the holiday season.  Edhat
  • Crane Country Day Fair took place Sunday at Crane School in Montecito. The event had a petting zoo, face painting, cupcake walk, and a stand selling homemade treats—bringing families, community members, and friends together.  KEYT
  • Little Miss Bossy is a seven-month-old domestic longhair holding court at the Santa Maria Campus who may start off shy but soon shows gentle authority and soft fur.   • SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket Sunday afternoon from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 12:24 p.m. carrying 28 Starlink satellites that pushed the total above 10,000 — the booster landed successfully on a Pacific droneship about eight minutes later.  Noozhawk

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Visitor Center reported 2,000 fewer international tourists in September—a 25% drop from last year—while local hotels noted an increase in in-state guests. Local tour operators said the change may affect spending since visitors from California tend to stay for shorter periods and usually spend less.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Unified School District announced that over 51% of its students met or exceeded state literacy standards on the CAASPP, with 51.7% scoring in English Language Arts and 41.4% in Math—district leaders praised teachers and staff for their key role and said they will build on this progress.  Edhat

  • Governor Newsom signed AB 1056 into law to phase out set gillnets (mile-long nets used for catching halibut and white sea bass) so that over 100 marine species will be protected from entanglement.  Edhat

  • Cal Fire and the NFPA are teaming up with the State Fire Marshal in a Fire Prevention Week campaign called Charge into Fire Safety—urging residents to buy, charge, and recycle lithium-ion batteries safely at home. The campaign aims to reduce the risk of fires from battery mishandling and reminds people to follow proper charging and disposal guidelines.  Edhat
