  • On October 17, 2025, People Helping People held the Legacies of Hope dinner at the Inn at Mattei’s Tavern in Los Olivos where key supporters received Luminary Awards with custom copper sculptures by local Chumash artist Beau Armenta. PHP leaders noted the candle lighting marked a shift in funding support—each pledge aimed to help vulnerable residents secure essential services.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Hearts Therapeutic Equestrian Center in Santa Barbara, which has provided life-changing equine therapy to children, adults with special needs, and veterans for 40 years, received the Mayor’s Nonprofit Champions of Accessibility Award on October 23 during National Disability Employment Awareness Month—Santa Barbara Mayor Randy Rowse highlighted the center’s strong commitment to making therapy accessible.  Santa Barbara Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum will host Whale Trivia Night on November 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Night Lizard Brewing Company in downtown Santa Barbara—celebrating the second anniversary of the Whale Heritage Area designation. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln Elementary School, Santa Barbara’s first elementary, will hold its All Year Reunion at Shoreline Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8—alumni will share memories during an open mic with Marvin Gibson leading a noon tribute while free hamburgers, soft drinks and cake are served and guests bring a side dish to share.  Noozhawk
  • A memorial bench honoring Jack Garvin was unveiled at the entrance of Delta High School on Oct. 23 to mark his 67-year career in education. District leaders introduced the bench and his family joined in celebrating his 20 years on the school board—highlighting his lasting impact on students and staff.  Noozhawk
  • A substitute teacher at San Marcos High School was removed after a student reported that he repeatedly used a racial slur during first period reading of Of Mice and Men—school officials are now offering support and reviewing next steps.  KEYT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, about 60 Santa Barbara High School students left class and marched to the County Administration Building to call for a law that would make fossil fuel companies pay for damage from climate change — they joined 50 schools statewide to support the bill that could fund disaster recovery efforts.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Los Padres National Forest will begin prescribed fire operations this week as approvals allow — the work will continue through winter to reduce overgrown vegetation that increases wildfire risks.   • SpaceX will launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 4 at Vandenberg Space Force Base today at 7:17 a.m.—the booster on its 19th flight is set to deploy 28 Starlink satellites into orbit. The stage will later land on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship in the Pacific Ocean.  Noozhawk
  • On Wednesday, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department conducted helicopter training over oil platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel. Copter 964 performed hoist evolutions with Platform Houchin operated by Beacon West Energy Group—ensuring firefighters and air crews remained proficient for offshore rescues and maritime emergencies.  Edhat
  • Santa Barbara collected $3.3 million in Transient Occupancy Taxes in September from hotels and short-term rentals, and year-to-date revenue reached $11.6 million + the collections were 0.8% above the budget. The tax rate of 12% allocates 10% to city funds and 2% to clean water projects + the city uses these funds for essential services.  Noozhawk

  • San Marcos High girls' volleyball team swept top-seeded Rancho Christian (25-15, 25-21, 25-20) on Thursday night at Thunderhut and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Division II playoffs. They will face Long Beach Poly on Wednesday on the road.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Westmont Women’s Soccer won 2-1 against Hawai’i Pacific at Waipi’o Soccer Stadium last Thursday with goals from Sierra Martin and Amelia Villa—coach Lauren Matthias said the team adjusted its tactics well. The Warriors had 22 shots on goal and will conclude play today when they face the Silverswords of Chaminade at noon HST—adding a crucial test to their PacWest campaign.  Noozhawk
